The Beagle Association of Paraguay organised an afternoon of fur, fun, and wagging tails at Koranzo Family Ethnoveterinary in Asunción. Although the event on 12 October 2025 was created for beagle owners, dogs of all breeds were welcome.
Families and their pets enjoyed a variety of activities during the cheerful “Beaglevention.” There were games and prizes for the pups, educational talks for the owners, portrait sessions, and an illustrator creating cartoons of dogs and their humans. The Asunción Times was there to report on the cheerful dog-friendly gathering.
Many educational talks
The “Beaglevention” was not only a space for play but also for learning. To ensure safety and order, clear rules were displayed for all participants. Every dog had to remain on a leash, and owners were asked to bring their own water. Talks covered feeding, health, and behavioural care, and a new initiative offered health insurance packages for pets, a novelty in Paraguay.
Veterinarian Sofía López discussed how to keep beagles healthy and active. “Each breed has its own quirks,” she said. “Beagles tend to gain weight easily, so it is important to feed them well, protect their joints and adapt exercise to their age and weight.”
Claudia Cassera, a veterinary dermatologist, highlighted the importance of proper hygiene. “Many dogs I see, suffer from skin conditions that could be avoided. Beagles, in particular, need three or four baths a month to stay healthy and prevent disease.”
Finally, trainer Marcos Maiz talked about behaviour and conduct of beagles. “The key to training and educating your dogs is patience. Even more with beagles, who are really anxious and desperate for food. It is about setting boundaries, not imposing punishments. With owners educating their pups five minutes daily, it is enough to train them. At the time of walks, it is key to give them space. If we are tense, we transmit these feelings to our dogs”.

Paraguayan Beagle Association
The organiser of the event was Betania Cesario, a member of the Association and proud mom to Donna, a 4-year-old beagle. “She came into my life and revolutionised it. It is for the love I feel for her that I decided to do these kinds of meetings.”
This is the second encounter she has had, but the first “Beagle Fun Day”. She mentions that “With these kinds of events, we are aiming to promote responsible pet ownership. What unites us is the love for our animals.”
Very energetic and curious

Beagles, being very energetic and curious, have a tendency to run away from home. “We try to help owners who have lost their little friends. Also, with other species that get lost. We also help with medical bills for abandoned beagles, as well as encouraging people to adopt beagles who were abandoned. This happens because people still think that Leishmaniasis cannot be treated.”
The organisation has no president, but already two years of institutional life, with 245 members and many more followers on Instagram. She adds by saying, “Many people want us to be legally established, enough to hold larger events. I am still hesitant, due to various legal issues. Maybe in the future we can talk about a legally established Paraguayan Beagle Association.”
Betania mentions that every organisation that helps stray animals can be at their events. “Dog shelter Polki Squad was at our first encounter, but we have worked with several organisations in the case of lost beagles. Any pet encounter with these kinds of organizations is really helpful and a win-win.”

With their own stand, the animal shelter based on Luque, near Paraguay’s capital, was part of the event. With over a decade of existence, their aim was to collect funds to keep taking care of animals. As well as encouraging people to donate and adopt animals. Volunteer Mirta Cristaldo was selling hot dogs and beagle-decorated mugs.
As long as they are invited, they often participate in these events. Their focus is to reach more people and to deliver a message not to abandon animals. Right now, they are taking care of more than 100 animals, most of them cats.

The heart behind the tails
Declared of municipal interest by the Municipality of Asunción, Beagle Fun Day will remain the association’s signature event. “We hope to hold more editions,” Betania said. “It is all about socialising our pets and letting them enjoy themselves in a safe, friendly space.”
More than just an afternoon of games, Beagle Fun Day Asunción reflected the growing culture of responsible pet care in Paraguay. It brought together people who share the same conviction: that every animal deserves love, respect, and a joyful life.
