Asunción’s Public Squares Receive Intensive Cleaning And Restoration Work

The Municipality of Asunción is cleaning and maintaining two public squares in Paraguay’s capital. First, workers are cleaning Epifanio Méndez Fleitas Square, where Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia Avenue meets Estados Unidos Street. The square stands opposite the Ministry of Justice. As a result, it serves people visiting the institution and pedestrians crossing the busy area.

Cleaning and maintenance in central Asunción

Municipal crews are cleaning and revitalising the site to improve its appearance. They also aim to keep it suitable for public use. Additionally, the square honours Epifanio Méndez Fleitas, a prominent figure in Paraguay’s political and cultural history. Therefore, public square maintenance helps preserve places linked to the country’s past.

Public square maintenance, according to officials, is a key part of keeping these community spaces welcoming for everyone. Through its Directorate of Urban Services, the municipality aims to improve Epifanio Méndez Fleitas Square and Batallón 40 Square.

Batallón 40 Square receives improvements

Meanwhile, workers are refurbishing Batallón 40 Square in the Ciudad Nueva neighbourhood. The square occupies a block bordered by Mariscal Estigarribia, Eligio Ayala, General José María Bruguez and General Elizardo Aquino streets.

Currently, the work includes painting the pergola, wooden benches and bicycle racks. These improvements aim to preserve the facilities and make the square more welcoming. In addition, a sports field attracts young residents. Consequently, the square provides a meeting point for physical activity and community interaction.

For neighbourhood residents, maintaining these facilities helps protect spaces for exercise, socialising and outdoor activities. Furthermore, regular upkeep can extend the useful life of public furniture. However, the municipality has not announced a budget or completion date for these interventions.

An effort to care for public spaces

More broadly, the latest public square maintenance work forms part of the municipality’s efforts to care for public areas. In May 2026, the municipality launched the Protectores de Espacios Verdes (Green Spaces Protectors) programme. Through this initiative, residents, businesses, educational institutions and community organisations can help maintain parks and squares.

At the launch, the municipality reported managing 210 public green spaces. Specifically, these included 140 squares, 52 small squares, 16 parks and two waterfront areas. The initiative therefore promotes shared responsibility for maintaining and restoring these locations.

The municipality also urges residents to avoid littering and protect public facilities. Although cleaning and painting can improve a square’s appearance, lasting upkeep requires continued care. For this reason, visitors and nearby communities also play an important role.

Ultimately, these public square maintenance efforts aim to create cleaner surroundings and more welcoming public spaces. In turn, residents can benefit from better-maintained places for recreation, exercise and community life.
