In the first six months of 2025, Paraguay exported over 25 million kilos of beef to Taiwan, valued at US$151 million. Taiwan also accounted for more than 80% of Paraguay’s pork exports. Taiwan, after Chile, is now the second largest market for Paraguayan beef, and the key importer of pork. This trade is expected to strengthen further following the implementation of a zero-tariff agreement which came into effect on 5 July.
Darío Filártiga, Paraguay’s newly appointed ambassador to Taiwan, has emphasised the growing importance of the Asian nation as a destination for Paraguayan meat exports.
Expanding trade relations
Filártiga noted Taiwan’s increasing significance as a trading partner for Paraguay, benefiting from preferential tariffs. Beyond beef and pork, discussions are underway to facilitate the export of poultry and other grains, including rice.
“Taiwan is one of the main buyers of protein-rich foods, and we want to open an important market for our national rice,” Filártiga said in a recent interview with Radio Nacional del Paraguay. “We know that all our efforts will be aimed at ensuring our people receive the benefits through trade and cooperation,” Filártiga added.
Paraguay’s National Animal Health and Quality Service (SENACSA) reported last month that over US$1 billion worth of beef exports were recorded in the first six months of 2025. This number includes the 25 million kilos exported to Taiwan, and is a whopping 37% increase compared to the same period last year.
Strengthening historical ties
Taiwan has a long-standing partnership with Paraguay, collaborating in areas such as education, public works, and defence and security. These relations were established on July 12, 1957 and celebrated last month at the commemorative Taiwan-Paraguay 68 Conference in Asunción, where the nations celebrated the 68th anniversary of diplomatic relations between them.
Filártiga will officially take up his post in Taiwan during the latter half of August. His diplomatic mission will focus on attracting Taiwanese investment in Paraguay.
