A collaborative medical mission between specialists from Paraguay’s Acosta Ñu Children’s General Hospital and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center has provided life-changing treatment for children with complex colorectal diseases. The complex surgeries initiative, which took place in Paraguay, saw a team of international and local experts conduct highly specialised surgical procedures for young patients from across the country.
During the mission, medical professionals clinically evaluated more than 40 children at the Paraguayan medical centre. Following initial consultations, early March 2026, the team identified and selected the 15 most complex cases for surgical intervention. These intricate procedures were subsequently carried out over five intensive days.
Focus on complex colorectal conditions
The operations primarily addressed severe pathologies such as Hirschsprung’s disease and anorectal malformations. These congenital conditions significantly compromise intestinal function. Consequently, they can cause serious difficulties with bowel movements, lead to recurrent infections, and have a profound negative impact on a patient’s overall quality of life. The surgeries aimed to correct these issues, offering the children a chance for improved health and well-being.
The surgical sessions were exceptionally demanding, often starting early in the morning and extending late into the night. This schedule highlighted the intensity of the collaboration between the hospital’s multidisciplinary teams and the visiting specialists from the United States. The shared goal was to provide the highest standard of care for each child, regardless of the complexity of their condition.
A multidisciplinary and intensive collaboration
Alberto Rovira, head of the hospital’s Department of Surgery, explained that such complex surgeries demand comprehensive and seamless coordination among various healthcare professionals. He emphasised the teamwork required for a successful outcome.
“These surgeries involve coordinated work between pediatricians, anesthesiologists, specialised nurses, surgical technicians, and surgeons, both before and after surgery,” he stated.
In a separate statement, Rovira noted that the success of the treatment is heavily dependent on the quality of follow-up and post-operative care. This aspect has become a central focus of the partnership between the two hospitals. Effective long-term management is crucial for patients to achieve the best possible results following their operations.
Enhancing local expertise through training
To address the need for specialised aftercare, the Acosta Ñu hospital has been conducting joint training programmes with the Cincinnati medical team since 2025. This ongoing effort is designed to strengthen the skills of Paraguayan professionals in both paediatric colorectal surgery and specialised nursing care. This marked the second medical mission undertaken by the same international team in less than twelve months, demonstrating a strong commitment to the partnership.
Over the six days of collaborative work, more than a dozen families received the benefit of surgeries performed by internationally recognised specialists. Simultaneously, the hospital’s own professionals gained invaluable experience, incorporating new surgical techniques and advancing their training in care strategies. These strategies are vital for enabling patients to achieve better bowel control and, ultimately, an improved quality of life.
