Central Bank Of Paraguay Doubles Instant Payment Limit To ₲10 Million

The Central Bank of Paraguay has officially approved a significant update to the nation’s payment regulations, doubling the maximum limit for instant electronic transfers. The cap for transactions made through the Instant Payment System has been increased from ₲5 million (approximately US$770) to ₲10 million (approximately US$1540).

This change is part of a broader amendment to the General Regulations of the Paraguay Payment System, known as Sistema de Pagos del Paraguay (SIPAP).

With the new regulations in place, users can now conduct instant transfers of up to ₲10 million at any time. The service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing continuous access to funds. This development is designed to offer greater financial flexibility and convenience for both individuals, and businesses across the country.

Implementation and regulatory requirements

All financial entities participating in the Instant Payment System, or Sistema de Pagos Instantáneos (SPI), are now required to update their electronic channels. These institutions must adjust their public-facing platforms to accommodate the new ₲10 million maximum transfer amount.

According to the Central Bank of Paraguay, the primary objective of this measure is to strengthen the use of electronic payments nationwide. The bank aims to provide a more adaptable system that facilitates rapid, secure, and timely payments. By increasing the transfer limit, the central bank is directly addressing the needs of a modernising economy, where larger and more frequent digital transactions are becoming commonplace for commercial and personal use.

Integration of new payment technologies

Beyond increasing the transaction limit, the updated regulations also lay the groundwork for integrating advanced payment technologies. The new framework includes specific provisions for the incorporation of new modules and functionalities. These innovations include the CDA-d, a QR Hub, and Near Field Communication (NFC) payment technologies.

The introduction of these new features is expected to further streamline the payment process and expand the options available to consumers and merchants. For example, the QR Hub will standardise QR code payments, while NFC technology will enable contactless transactions.

Formal basis for the instant payment limit update

The legal authority for this regulatory change comes from Resolution N° 2, Acta N° 12, dated 12 March 2026, as cited in the official announcement. This resolution provides the formal framework for the amendments, ensuring the update is implemented with full regulatory backing.

The decision to raise the instant transfer limit not only offers immediate practical benefits to users but also signals a direction towards a more dynamic and technologically advanced digital economy in Paraguay.
