The Paraguayan Ministry of Children and Adolescents (MINNA), has announced that they are strengthening the National Program of Alternative Care and Adoption. The overriding objective is to provide children and adolescents in vulnerable situations with a safe and loving home, and by connecting them with families who want to adopt or foster a child in need in Paraguay.
The initiative focuses on the two usual routes of providing care: adoption, which guarantees a permanent environment, and foster care, a temporary solution for minors who need support in critical moments.
One of the recent cases that illustrates the importance of this program is that of Belén, a little girl of just 10 days old who, thanks to the intervention of the San Lorenzo Court and the National Alternative Care Program, was taken in by a family within the framework of a foster care process.
The baby, who was in intensive care due to her health condition, was recently discharged. During the rehabilitation process of her parents, who are currently able to care for her, Belén is protected and supported by a family that offers her the warmth and security she needs.
Both foster care and adoption can change the lives of children and give them the opportunity to grow up in a loving environment. Like Belén, many children in Paraguay are still waiting for a home that will give them stability and affection.
Adoption: A Forever Home
Adoption is intended to provide a permanent environment for children and adolescents who require a family. The program prioritises children over 6 years of age, children with disabilities, serious or chronic illnesses, and groups of siblings who must stay together. Adoption means offering a lasting commitment, ensuring that children receive the support and affection necessary for their emotional and social development.
The adoption process requires the presentation of personal and medical documentation, proof of employment and family stability, and compliance with the criteria established by the Ministry of Children and Adolescents.

Foster care: Temporary support full of love
Foster care, on the other hand, offers a temporary solution to children and adolescents who, for various reasons, have been separated from their families of origin. This program allows minors to live in a safe and loving environment while work is done to resolve their family situation.
Fostering is aimed at people willing to provide a temporary home, without the intention of adopting, but with the willingness to collaborate with the technical team and the family of origin of the minor. It does not imply a permanent commitment, but rather a profound act of generosity and support in times of crisis.

Adopt or foster a child and make a positive difference
Being a foster or adoptive family is an act of generosity and love that transforms both a child’s life and your own. By offering a home, you provide hope and security to children who need it most.
In Paraguay, many children and adolescents are still waiting for the warmth of a home, the care and love that will allow them to develop in a stable environment. No matter the modality, whether adoption or foster care, every gesture counts and can change the future of those who need it most.
If you feel that you can provide that space of love and protection, we invite you to join this noble cause. Sign up as a foster parent or adoptive family, and become a positive difference in the life of a child or teenager. Additionally, please share this information with anyone else who is potentially interested in becoming a adoptive or foster family to a Paraguayan child in need.
