To mark the 487th anniversary of the founding of the city of Asunción, a number of streets in the downtown core will be closed due to various events and cultural proposals.
According to the Directorate of Transit, affected streets include Palma Street between Ayolas and 15 de Agosto, and 25 de Mayo Street between Chile and Independencia Nacional. These key streets, stretching two blocks each, will be closed to vehicular traffic throughout the day, allowing pedestrians to immerse themselves in the festivities.
The reason for holding the event on these two streets has historical and cultural significance for Paraguay:
- Palma Street is one of the oldest streets, along with Estrella and Oliva streets, and was named by the first constitutional president, Carlos Antonio López, after the coat of arms on the national flag of Paraguay
- Similarly, 25 de Mayo Street was named to honour the date of Buenos Aires’ independence. Originally, Paraguay’s independence was expected to be declared on May 25th, the same day as Argentina’s. However, due to concerns about a potential overthrow, the declaration was moved to the early morning of May 14th and 15th.
The programme of celebrations will kick off at 9am, with the parade for the Anniversary of Asunción. And the festival will be packed with cultural events, shows and activities for the entire day. Local artists, musicians and performers will take to the streets to showcase the city’s vibrant arts scene.
