Asunción has taken a major step in regional air connectivity with the official launch of the first-ever direct flights route to Rio de Janeiro. The low-cost airline JetSMART presented the new service in Asunción, alongside tourism operators, national authorities, media representatives, and guests. Moreover, the route strengthens Paraguay’s international links with Brazil’s second-largest city. The airline expects the connection to stimulate tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between both capitals.
With three weekly frequencies and a projected 46,000 passengers during the first year, JetSMART aims to consolidate Asunción as a growing regional hub. In addition, the service responds to increasing demand for affordable and efficient travel options in South America.
A strategic step
During the launch event, Javier Ramírez, General Director of Tourism Management at the National Secretariat of Tourism (SENATUR), highlighted the broader impact of the new route.
“Every new flight not only connects destinations. Instead, it connects economies, cultures, and people. Consequently, it directly boosts commercial activity and regional integration,” Ramírez stated.
Likewise, Francisca Del Rio, JetSMART’s International Markets Manager, expressed strong confidence in the Paraguayan market. She emphasised the company’s positive results in the country and its commitment to further growth.
“Given the results we have achieved, we are making a strong bet on Paraguay. Furthermore, being the first airline to operate a regular route between these cities is a tremendous achievement,” Del Rio explained.
As a result, both public and private stakeholders see this route as a concrete step towards improving national connectivity and positioning Paraguay more competitively in the regional tourism market.
Convenient flights designed for travellers
Beyond low fares, JetSMART’s value proposition focuses on practical schedules that maximise travel time. The route will operate three times per week, specifically on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Flights from Asunción will arrive in Rio de Janeiro at 11:00, allowing passengers to enjoy a full day at their destination. Meanwhile, return flights depart after 19:00, offering travellers the opportunity to make the most of their final day.
Therefore, the schedule appeals to both leisure travellers seeking extended stays and business passengers requiring efficient travel planning. Additionally, the timing supports short weekend breaks and flexible itineraries.
A modern fleet
JetSMART enters this new market supported by a strong international reputation. Recently, the airline was recognised for the third time as the best low-cost carrier in the region. It also operates the newest fleet in South America, ensuring high standards of safety, operational efficiency, and environmental performance.
With this new connection, iconic landmarks such as the Christ the Redeemer statue and Rio’s world-famous beaches are now only a few hours away from Paraguay’s capital. Ultimately, the route opens new opportunities for tourism growth, business development, and cultural exchange between both countries.
