DAK’S Korean Restaurant: Bringing The Taste Of Home To Asunción

One of the hardest things to give up when travelling? Food. At DAK’S Korean restaurant, the deep connection people have with familiar flavours is understood and honoured. Food is so deeply ingrained in us that, as happened to the stern food critic in Disney’s Ratatouille, it becomes the fastest and most affordable way to transport people back to their original homes.

So, what do you do when you crave something specific that you cannot find anywhere else? Alejandro Lee decides to make this a business, and share with Paraguayans and newcomers the taste of home.

Creating a warm and inviting space

“Even though DAK’S is a relatively new space, we want to create a warm and cosy environment,” Alejandro explains, his expression lighting up as he speaks about his work. “In Korean, the word for chicken is pronounced dak, and since we specialise in dishes made with chicken, we use the plural in English to name our business, so DAK’S it is.”

As soon as you walk under the orange DAK’S sign, you notice their human and honest approach to food. The interior combines modern touches with a relaxed atmosphere, inviting diners to settle in and enjoy their time without feeling rushed.

“Instead of an artificial theme, we want to create a comfortable space where anyone can come without any pressure. The consistency in the flavour and service is what we value the most”, comments Alejandro. This philosophy extends beyond décor, from the friendly greetings at the door to the care taken in presenting each plate.

A diverse clientele

The clientele is very varied. “We are visited by people looking for a break in their daily routines, people who value the quality of the food, and above all, people who want to experience the authentic taste of Korea.”

Korea and Paraguay have a long history together, dating back to 1962 when the two countries began diplomatic relations, something Alejandro notices as well. “Many clients greet in Korean. There are many people who speak the language in Paraguay.”

He recalls one memorable visit. “Once, a nun that we would see frequently in the neighbourhood visited DAK’S. She lived in Korea for many years, and speaks Korean perfectly.”

The restaurant emphasise a relaxing atmosphere, away from noisy environments. “We want people to feel as if they are at home,” Alejandro highlights, a principle that is particularly important when serving a traditional dish to someone who has never tried it before.

What do people try at DAK’S?

Alejandro knows the favourites by heart. “For those who want to try different sauces, the ‘Original’ menu with an additional sauce is very popular, and for those who look for a moderately spicy taste, the ‘Supreme’ menu is a favourite.”

For adventurous diners, Alejandro has a special recommendation. “Our emblematic onion and yoghurt sauce is highly recommended, since it is a sauce that we make ourselves and that cannot be found anywhere else in Paraguay.”

The combination of quality ingredients, distinctive sauces, and carefully prepared accompaniments contributes to the restaurant’s reputation for offering a meal that is both satisfying and memorable.
