Pilar Now Has A Water Plaza, A New Recreational And Cultural Community Space

In the city of Pilar, capital of Ñeembucú, the water plaza “Plaza del Agua” was inaugurated today, an innovative recreational and cultural space developed in agreement between the local municipality and ESSAP that symbolises the union of the community to highlight the importance of water as a vital resource and an essential part of the cultural and social development of the region.

The space was inaugurated during an event that took place in the Crucecita neighborhood of the capital of Ñeembucú, with the attendance of the vice president of the Republic, Pedro Alliana, the president of the Paraguayan Health Services Company (Essap), Luís Fernando Bernal and the municipal mayor of Pilar, Fernando Ramírez.

The Plaza del Agua has walkways, benches, toilets, a children’s playground, an open-air gym, a model parking lot and low-consumption LED lighting.

This space is a tribute to the cultural wealth of Pilar, which complements its identity as the birthplace of national basketball and home of the famous poet Carlos Miguel Jiménez, author of immortal works such as Flor de Pilar. It is designed to be a family meeting point, where residents can enjoy a place designed for them.

On the occasion, the head of ESSAP, Luis Fernando Bernal, highlighted the historical legacy of Pilar, known as the “authentic Pearl of the South,” and underlined its fundamental role in the history of Paraguay as a key port and bastion of trade in its early days. He also recalled the city’s resilience in the face of events such as the 1983 flood and its ability to move forward with strength and determination.

He also stressed the commitment of the institution he heads, not only to the provision of drinking water and sewage services, but also to projects that place citizens at the centre of their policies. In this regard, he pointed out that the land ceded for this project is an example of the will to promote and contribute to the development of cities.
