The international play P. Candies is going to be represented in Asunción. While plays in Paraguay are normally presented in Spanish or Guaraní language, this one is 100% in English. P. Candies is not the first ever play presented in English in the country’s capital, but is part of a new wave of work shown in the language of Shakespeare. The aim is to open the door of theatrical plays to all. P. Candies in Asunción will be performed at “El Granel” on 10 and 11 of October, 2025, starting at 20:00.
The play was also held in September 2025 at “La Cafebreria” in the Villa Morra area in Asunción. P. Candies was written by Ale López and was produced by “Camaleon Teatro,” a renown theatrical company in Paraguay. The lead stage actors are Sofía Salazar and Maitee Ovelar.
P. Candies in a globalised era
P. Candies is not a drama, but rather a comedy or satire. The storyline evolves around a socio-economical perspective in a humorous way. The aim is to reflect on the realities of the contemporary world as well. A mix of reflectivity and laughter, attendees will be able to discuss post-show to facilitate a lively and enriching exchange of ideas and perspectives. Overall, the interactive performance is promoted as a unique journey of wit, fun, and thought-provoking theatre.

“I wrote this script while I was in Argentina, right at a time when there was an attempt to impose an ideology on society. It was quite funny to observe the whole structure and background of the movement,” playwriter Ale López says.
P. Candies is not a national pla, but rather an international one. Ale López says that the theatrical work was first presented in Spain, in Spanish. Later on, the play was also presented in Spanish in Paraguay, before transitioning to an English format. P. Candies was also exported to India and Russia to be translated and performed in Hindi and Russian.
Why, you may ask? Because of family ties. “My mom is from Paraguay and my father is Indian, born in Moscow. My childhood was mostly in India, in Mumbai, Delhi, and Saharanpur. After that my university was in Argentina, and I moved a bit around the world.”
Diversity of theatrical work
The city of Asunción is offering different styles of theatrical work. Production companies are using different kinds of stage or settings. For example, “Hasta Que Te Quieras” was not performed in a standard theatre, but in a home. The stage actors and actresses were bringing the attendees from one room of the house to the other. “Aciago,” was yes, using a theatre, but created a new, smaller stage, to create an optimist atmosphere. The theatrical scene in the city and in Paraguay is growing, in different facets.
