Young Paraguayan artisans can win up to Gs 5 million through the IPA Hajapo prize

The Paraguayan Institute of Crafts (IPA) announced the 4th edition of the “Hajapo” Prize, an initiative that since 2021 seeks to promote the talent and creativity of the new generations of artisans in the country. This recognition, aligned with the First National Crafts Policy, aims to strengthen traditional techniques and encourage innovation in the Paraguayan artisanal sector.

The competition invites young artisans between the ages of 18 and 35, registered with the IPA, to present an innovative piece within the various modalities recognised in IPA Resolution No. 270/2020. The categories include textiles, leather, wood, ceramics, plant fibers and artistic expressions of indigenous communities. The work must incorporate contemporary elements without losing cultural essence and local identity.

A committee appointed by the IPA will evaluate the proposals under four fundamental criteria: technical quality, protection of cultural heritage, creativity and innovation, and clarity in the description of the process of elaboration of the work. This approach seeks to ensure that the pieces are original and that they promote the preservation of ancestral techniques.

Awards and opportunities

The winners, up to a maximum of 10, will receive Gs. 5,000,000 each, in addition to a space for sale at the SOMOS of the IPA and the opportunity to exhibit their works at other cultural events.

The application period will be open until September 17. The full information, conditions and forms are available here in this Google drive folder.

The Jajapo Prize represents a unique opportunity for young artisans to demonstrate their talent, merging tradition and modernity, and help to bring Paraguayan craftsmanship to new markets.
