Paraguay Rolls Out First Electric Buses: Over 8,000 Riders In First Weeks

Paraguay has taken an important step towards sustainable transport by introducing its first electric buses. Donated by the Republic of Taiwan, 30 electric buses in total were part of the donation. Now, within weeks since its first tests, more than 8,000 people have already used the buses. With almost 900 trips completed, the service is now looking to consolidate its position after this initial trial stage.

The new buses operate along a metropolitan route connecting Asunción and San Lorenzo, running daily from 05:00 to 23:00. The line introduces a new form of connectivity between both cities, with properly signposted stops along the entire route. This allows for more orderly boarding and disembarking of passengers.

The first trials

Monday, 22 December 2025, marked the debut of the new electric buses. Initially, only ten units were put into service in order to monitor performance and collect operational data. Once the necessary information was gathered and adjustments were made, the remaining 20 electric buses were gradually incorporated into regular operation.

To support the service and its future expansion, two charging stations are functioning, one in Asunción and another in San Lorenzo. Both facilities have electric chargers, technical infrastructure, and security systems specifically designed for the fleet.

New fixed stops

In the most densely populated areas of Asunción and San Lorenzo, the line features stops every 500 to 800 metres, facilitating pedestrian access and improving connectivity in high-activity zones.

Between Mercado 4 and the National University of Asunción (UNA), stops are spaced further apart, at approximately one-kilometre intervals. This layout aims to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times along one of the busiest sections of the route.

In total, there are 19 designated stops between Asunción and San Lorenzo, both outbound and inbound. Buses on this line only allow boarding and disembarking at these signposted stops, reinforcing a more structured service model.

Towards a modern transport system

Early reactions from users have been largely positive. Passengers have highlighted the comfort of the electric buses, the presence of air conditioning, phone charging ports, and the overall quality of the ride. “These buses are very comfortable, with air conditioning. I hope people appreciate and take care of them, because the ride is so good,” said one user. Another added: “It is an impeccable bus, super comfortable, with phone charging ports and a very pleasant interior temperature. It feels like travelling in your own home.”

Beyond individual experiences, the introduction of electric buses represents a broader step towards the modernisation of Paraguay’s public transport system. The project combines cleaner technology, improved organisation, and a renewed focus on user experience, addressing long-standing challenges in urban mobility.
