Bolivian Stadium Not Ready, Asunción Takes Over 2025 Copa Sudamericana Final

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) has announced that Asunción will once again host the final of the 2025 Copa Sudamericana. The event in Paraguay’s capital is scheduled for 22 November. Conmebol states that a recent technical inspection of the Ramón “Tahuichi” Aguilera stadium in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, revealed setbacks in the stadium’s renovation and improvements.

The technical report concluded that insufficient time remained to complete the necessary works in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. The progress was deemed insufficient to meet the deadline for hosting the 2025 Copa Sudamericana final.

Collaboration and preparations

In light of these findings, Conmebol decided to relocate the final to Asunción, maintaining the original date of the match. The decision follows established protocol for single-match finals, which prioritises Asunción, that hosted the previous final, given its pre-existing infrastructure and experience. Discussions have commenced with the Paraguayan government and the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) to coordinate organisational efforts for the event.

Eight teams still on the Road to Asunción

Eight teams still have the chance of making it to the 2025 Copa Sudamericana Final. Quarter-final matches kick-off on 16 September 2025 with Lanús (Argentina) facing Fluminense (Brazil) at 21:30. On 17 September, Bolívar from Bolivia welcomes Brazilian Atlético Mineiro at 19:00, followed by Independiente del Valle (Ecuador) against Once Caldas (Colombia) at 21:30. On 18 September, Alianza Lima (Peru) takes on Universidad de Chile at 21:30. Return matches are scheduled for 23, 24, and 25 September.

Bolivia left hoping for 2027

The change of venue for the 2025 Copa Sudamericana Final, according to Conmebol, aims to preserve the high quality of the Copa Sudamericana final and meet commitments to fans, participating clubs, and associated companies and brands. Conmebol will continue investing in, and improving the “Ramón “Tahuichi” Aguilera stadium for future tournaments.

The Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) has already expressed interest in hosting the 2027 Copa Sudamericana final, according to the statement.
