As part of the Paraguay-Taiwan World Sandwich Day celebrations, The Asunción Times is featuring stories from some of the many Paraguayans who live in Taiwan. Here, Diana María González tells us about how she came to Taiwan, and why she is involved in the Earth Sandwich Project.
“My name is Diana María Montserrath González Villalba, I am 18 years old and come from Paraguay. I am currently studying in Taiwan on a scholarship, and I’d like to share how I arrived here and what participating in the Earth Sandwich Project means to me—a global initiative that symbolically connects people worldwide.”
“The idea of studying in Taiwan interested me after meeting a scholarship recipient who had already studied here. Her experience inspired me, so I sought as much information as possible. I learned about the scholarship during my first year of technical high school. It was something I wanted to try, and although it seemed like a distant dream, I was determined. As soon as I graduated, I applied, and thankfully, I was accepted! I am incredibly grateful to my family, who has supported me at every step, constantly motivating and encouraging me.”
“Arriving in Taiwan was filled with excitement and challenges. Every aspect, from the language and culture to the distance from home, was a challenge. However, I gradually learned to adapt and see each day as an opportunity to learn something new, both about Taiwan and myself.”
“My involvement in the Earth Sandwich Project happened by coincidence. My roommate was the one who told me about this event. She explained that the goal is to connect two opposite points on Earth to symbolise global unity. I found this concept fascinating and significant because it shows that, despite physical and cultural distances, people can be united and collaborate on creative and inspiring projects. For me, the Earth Sandwich Project represents that when we aim to achieve something, no barrier can stop us.”
“Before coming to Taiwan, my life in Paraguay was centered on my studies and personal growth. I was always a dedicated student, both academically and personally, and from a young age, I had a strong affinity for languages. Learning and speaking other languages has always fascinated me, as I feel it allows me to see the world from different perspectives. During high school in a technical institution, I specialised in computer science, which helped me develop skills in technology and logic.”
“So far, my life in Taiwan has been an unforgettable experience. Studying the Chinese language is a constant challenge, but I enjoy every step of the process, as it helps me integrate better into this rich and unique culture. Additionally, exploring every corner of this beautiful island, from its mountains to its temples, and connecting with people from various countries has allowed me to learn and share my own Paraguayan culture. Each day in Taiwan reminds me of the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones to grow and learn.”
“To me, participating in the Earth Sandwich Project is a way of showing that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. I firmly believe that we set our own limits and need to break these barriers to see how far we can go. Every sacrifice has its reward, and every reward comes with sacrifice. This project symbolises unity, creativity, and the possibility that, with effort and dedication, we can create meaningful and lasting connections worldwide.”
