Paraguay’s National Highway Patrol has launched its annual Summer Operation to improve road safety nationwide. The initiative involves nearly 500 officers deployed across key routes and cities. The campaign aligns with Safe Summer 2026, the project in which Paraguay deploys a major river security operation. The Highway Patrol summer road safety operation will remain in force until 1 March 2026, covering the peak holiday travel period. Authorities say the aim is to prevent accidents during increased summer traffic.
Increased presence nationwide
Every summer, traffic rises sharply as people travel to beaches, resorts, and holiday towns. For this reason, the Highway Patrol has reinforced its presence on national routes. Checks are carried out from Monday to Thursday, between 04:00 and 23:00. Meanwhile, weekends and public holidays see additional patrols and roadside assistance.
Moreover, special operations are planned for departures from and returns to Asunción. These measures target days with the highest vehicle flow. According to officials, visibility and prevention are key strategies. As a result, drivers are more likely to comply with traffic rules. Furthermore, patrols are concentrated in high-traffic areas. These include San Lorenzo, Luque, San Bernardino, and Encarnación. Ciudad del Este and several cities in the Central Department are also covered.
Nearly 500 officers and extensive resources
In total, 484 national inspectors are participating in the operation. The inspectos work under a rotating system to ensure constant coverage. Officers are equipped with breathalysers, speed radars, cameras and electronic ticketing systems. The workers also carry payment terminals, printers and reflective safety gear.
In addition, the Highway Patrol has deployed a large vehicle fleet. This includes 61 pickup trucks, 12 cars, and 17 motorcycles. Four flatbed trucks and two buses support roadside assistance and logistics. Authorities say these resources allow faster responses to emergencies.
Focus on dangerous driving behaviours
The main objective is to reduce road accidents through enforcement and prevention. Officers are focusing on drink-driving, dangerous overtaking, and incorrect lane use. Officers are also checking pedestrian crossing violations and mandatory vehicle lighting. These behaviours are among the main causes of serious accidents.
The Highway Patrol is working alongside several institutions. These include the National Police, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and National Transport Directorate (Dinatran). Municipal police forces are also involved. This coordination strengthens control and emergency response. Finally, authorities are urging drivers to cooperate and respect traffic laws. The overall goal is clear. Ensuring safe journeys for everyone throughout the summer remains the top priority.
