Paraguay Pays Tribute to Dr. Eusebio Ayala on 150th Anniversary Of His Birth

In a dignified ceremony at the National Pantheon of Heroes, Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, laid a wreath of laurels to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Eusebio Ayala, one of Paraguay’s most distinguished historical figures.

The tribute commemorated Dr. Ayala’s birth on 14 August 1875 in what was then Barrero Grande, now the city of Eusebio Ayala.

Dr. Eusebio Ayala: Intellectual, jurist, journalist

General Manuel Rodríguez, Commander of the Paraguayan Army, delivered a stirring address, describing the late statesman as a “brilliant intellectual, jurist, journalist, and, above all, a patriot who devoted his life to serving the nation.”

Dr. Ayala’s remarkable career began early, shaped by his education at the National College of the Capital and the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at the National University of Asunción, followed by further studies in Europe. A prominent member of the “Noucentistas,” a group of Paraguayan intellectuals, he served as a congressman, Minister of Finance, Minister of Education, ambassador, and twice as President of the Republic (1921–1923 and 1932–1936).

Leadership during the Chaco War

General Rodríguez highlighted Dr. Ayala’s leadership during the Chaco War, noting, “He encouraged his people, reorganised finances, mobilised resources, and consistently bolstered national morale.”

His strategic vision and steadfast resolve earned him the enduring title of “President of Victory.”The ceremony, held at the “sacred altar of the nation,” paid homage to Dr. Ayala, whose remains have rested in the Pantheon since 29 September 1992 – the anniversary of Victory Day in the Battle of Boquerón and Soldiers’ Day – following their repatriation from Buenos Aires, where he passed away on 4 June 1942.

A brighter future for generations to come

In closing, General Rodríguez urged the people of Paraguay to draw inspiration from Dr. Ayala’s immortal legacy, and the courage of the nation’s heroes.

“May their example guide us with valour, honour, and unwavering commitment to building a brighter future for generations to come,” he declared.

The event was attended by military officials, dignitaries, and citizens, all united in honouring a towering figure in Paraguay’s history.
