In the heart of Paraguay’s countryside, a quiet but transformative change is unfolding. More than 27 kilometres of rural roads have recently been repaired across multiple districts in Guairá. This is one of the country’s key agricultural regions, located in the southern half of the country and the centre of the Eastern Region.
The upgrades aim to restore safe, reliable access to an estimated 4,400 residents whose livelihoods rely on well-maintained roads to access markets, schools, health centres, and communities.
These works are part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) to revitalize Paraguay’s secondary road network. This infrastructure is vital in regional development and food production. While highways grab headlines, it’s these rural routes, often dusty, bumpy, and neglected, that connect the people who grow food, raise cattle, and fuel the rural economy.
Road Repairs
In Borja, 5.5 kilometres of roadway were reshaped and levelled using motor graders along the routes of Barrero, Yeguarizo, and Oga Lata. In Paso Yobai, 15 kilometres of roads were improved in strategic corridors such as Arroyo Morotí, San Isidro and Paso Yobai, Nueva Guairá. These are not just transportation links; they are economic lifelines.
Further work included 2 kilometres of repairs in Colonia Guaraní (General Garay) and 4 kilometres of patching and compaction between Tuyutí and central Villarrica.
These initiatives follow the ones made in Southern Paraguay. Recently, new paved roads to ports in Itapúa were completed.
Goals and Priorities
This roadworks reflects a shift in infrastructure priorities: moving beyond reactive repairs toward proactive, sustainable upgrades that directly impact people’s quality of life. Better roads mean reduced vehicle maintenance costs, safer travel during rainy seasons, and faster access to essential services.
By focusing on local needs and community impact, the MOPC’s road rehabilitation plan is not only restoring pavement, it’s reconnecting lives. In a region where the road often is the bridge between isolation and opportunity, each kilometer repaired is a step toward a more inclusive and resilient Paraguay.
