Construction Begins On New Bañado Tacumbú Neighbourhood in Asunción

Work officially started on the Costanera Sur site in Asunción, the future home of the vibrant new Bañado Tacumbú area. Mid-June, the contracting firm set up its technical office, marking the first step in this transformative project. The team is busy mapping out the framework of the new community – every block, avenue, and street being meticulously planned.

Public Works and Communications Minister, Claudia Centurión, visited the site to share the exciting news. Initially, the focus will be on essential infrastructure. This contains installing the storm drainage network, sanitation systems, and ensuring a reliable supply of clean drinking water.

A brighter future for 2,500 families

Minister Centurión emphasised that this robust infrastructure is crucial for the 2,500 families who will soon call this neighbourhood home. “The new community is being built on over 60 hectares of land, strategically positioned at an elevation that safeguards against flooding,” she explained. “This marks the end of the annual exodus our compatriots faced when the river rose.”

Bañado Tacumbú: more than just homes

This development is not just about housing; it’s about building a complete community. Asunción is set to gain not only over 2,000 much-needed homes on the Costanera Sur, but also a state-of-the-art Gran Hospital de Asunción (Asunción Grand Hospital), with bids being accepted from 26 June.

Minister Centurión highlighted the city’s transformation, noting, “Asunción is evolving. We are not just building houses, we are investing in our future. We are doing this by creating modern health facilities, schools, police stations, and a comprehensive environment that protects our community, and shields them from the hardships of yearly floods.”

Women leading the way

This project is particularly noteworthy for the strong female leadership driving its progress. Minister Centurión proudly acknowledged the many talented women who are pouring their hearts and expertise into finding a permanent solution for the Bañado Tacumbú community. Their dedication is making the dream of homeownership a reality for 2,500 families.

Project details and partners

The TYCIV II S.A. Consortium was awarded the contract with a bid of over US$22.500 (Gs. 181.498 million). This initiative falls under the Bañado Sur – Tacumbú Neighbourhood Rehabilitation and Housing Programme (PRVBT), spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). MOPC is also involved in the project of overhead wires vanishing as Asunción’s Costanera embraces underground cabling.
