The Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant, located in Hernandarias, around 340 kilometres from Asunción, supplied more than 25,500 gigawatt-hours of electricity in 2025. This represents a 26.4% increase in the grid compared with the previous year. Itaipu makes history: As a result, the figure sets a new supply record for the National Electricity Administration ANDE.
The strong performance reflects higher operational efficiency and improved coordination between the Brazilian and Paraguayan electricity systems. Furthermore, the increase supports Paraguay’s growing industrial activity and residential consumption.
December sets highest monthly supply in history
According to the monthly production and supply report issued by the Technical Department of the Entity’s Right Bank energy generation in December exceeded 7,500 gigawatt-hours. Just over 4,000 gigawatt-hours were produced by the 50 Hz system. Of this total, 2,610 gigawatt-hours were supplied directly to ANDE.
Consequently, December became the highest monthly energy supply recorded in the administration’s history. This milestone confirms the plant’s capacity to respond to seasonal consumption peaks and operational demands.
Rising temperatures drive record electricity demand
This increase in generation comes at a crucial moment for the national electricity system. Meanwhile, ANDE reported a new record for instantaneous power demand in the National Interconnected System in December. Demand reached 5,280 megawatts at 14:12 during a day with an ambient temperature of 37°C and a heat index of 44°C.
Moreover, this peak surpassed the previous record registered on Friday, 28 November 2025, when demand reached 5,269 megawatts at 13:55. The figures highlight the direct impact of extreme heat on national electricity consumption.
At the time of the peak, Itaipu contributed 3,745 megawatts to the system. In addition, Yacyretá supplied 1,419 megawatts while Acaray generated 132 megawatts, with 16 megawatts exported.
Therefore, ANDE stated that it continues to strengthen the national electricity system to keep pace with the country’s growing energy demand. Grid investments and maintenance remain essential to prevent service disruptions during high consumption periods.
Itaipu makes history: Surpassing objectives
Total electricity generation reached 72,897 gigawatt-hours in 2025. This represents an increase of 8.6% compared with 2024. According to Itaipu, this volume would be sufficient to supply the country for approximately two years and nine months. The report also highlights the high availability of the generating units. In December, cumulative availability reached 96.29%. Consequently, this exceeded the company’s target of 94% by 2.29%.
Furthermore, the binational hydroelectric plant transferred more than US$ 460 million to the country in royalties compensation and payments to ANDE. Similarly, the Central Bank of Paraguay reported that the energy generation sector recorded a 10% income increase by the end of the third quarter of 2025. These results reinforce the strategic role of hydroelectric energy in national economic stability and long-term development.
Beyond energy production, the ITAIPU Dam remains one of the country’s leading tourist attractions. Visitors can explore the facilities and learn about renewable energy generation and binational cooperation. As a result, the site contributes not only to infrastructure development but also to educational tourism and regional visibility.
