109 Paraguayan Soldiers Assist In Battle Against Large Wildfire In Chaco Region

One hundred and nine specialist Paraguayan military personnel were deployed to assist volunteer firefighters in the country’s department of Presidente Hayes, in response to a large wildfire in the Chaco region. This joint operation, coordinated with the National Emergency Secretariat (SEN), took place near kilometre 110 of the Transchaco Route in the Presidente Hayes department.

According to the Minister of National Defence, Óscar González, the fire started on the afternoon of Wednesday 10 September 2025. The blaze was brought under control by approximately 1:30 into Thursday night, thanks to the swift response of the inter-agency forces. Heavy machinery from the Engineering Command was mobilised, but ultimately not required and returned to base.

Specialised personnel, and investigation

The deployment included personnel trained in wildfire suppression techniques, along with specialised vehicles and equipment for creating firebreaks and access routes. Minister González highlighted that Paraguay has over 750 military personnel trained for such emergencies, drawn from the Logistics Command, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Army.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities are emphasising the importance of strengthening preventative measures given the increased risk of wildfires during this time of year.

Ongoing challenges and volunteer firefighters

The large wildfire in the Chaco region highlights the ongoing challenge of wildfires in this area of the country, where dry conditions and strong winds often intensify fire risks. The department, known for its vast, arid landscapes and sparse population, has faced recurring fires that threaten both ecosystems and local communities. The rapid response to the blaze at the Transchaco Route underscores the critical role of coordinated efforts between military forces, volunteer firefighters, and government agencies like the National Emergency Secretariat.

The local volunteer firefighters in Presidente Hayes operate under the Volunteer Fire Department of Paraguay (CBVP), a nationwide network of unpaid, community-based responders. These volunteers, often locals with day jobs in agriculture or ranching, play a pivotal role in initial response efforts where professional resources are stretched thin due to the area’s vast distances and limited infrastructure.
