“Twilight of Bernardino Caballero” Revisits Paraguay’s Post-War President’s Final Days

A historical drama revisiting the final days of Bernardino Caballero, one of Paraguay’s most pivotal post-war leaders, is captivating theatergoers in the capital with its blend of intimate reflection and unflinching political reckoning. “El ocaso de Bernardino Caballero” (The Twilight of Bernardino Caballero), produced by Arkhé en escena, returns to the stage on 27, 28 and 29 March 2026 at the Alianza Francesa following a strong opening run, offering audiences a nuanced portrait of the former president as he confronts the personal and national scars left by the War of the Triple Alliance

The production centres on the last moments in the life of Bernardino Caballero, who served as president of Paraguay between 1839 and 1912. The play examines his decisions, his loyalties, and the profound wounds that marked the nation following the War of the Triple Alliance. Consequently, the narrative weaves together intimate memories and political tensions to create a compelling historical drama.

A focus on a historical figure

“Twilight of Bernardino Caballero” exposes the internal conflict between Caballero the man, the military leader, and the founder of a new republican era for the country. Ultimately, the play confronts themes of power, memory, and legacy during the decline of a pivotal protagonist in national history. The production is a creation of Arkhé en escena, with historical research and verification conducted by Fabián Chamorro. The script and direction are managed by Walter Mers, with Antonella Martínez serving as the assistant director.

The cast features performances by Félix Medina, Fabio Chamorro, Joaquín Díaz Sacco, and Juan Carlos Cañete. Performances will take place at the Alianza Francesa, located in Asunción at Mariscal Estigarribia 1039, between Brasil and EEUU. The show already ran three nights, and further presentations are scheduled on Friday 27, Saturday 28, and Sunday 29 March, with all shows beginning at 20:30.

Tickets for “Twilight of Bernardino Caballero” are available at the door for ₲100,000 (approximately US$15), and can also be purchased in advance through Passline.
