Paraguayan President Santiago Peña has led a ceremony to mark the official reopening of the comprehensively rebuilt and refurbished National Capital College (Colegio Nacional de la Capital, or CNC) ‘Gral. Bernardino Caballero’. Speaking at the event in Asunción, the president declared that the historic institution is now ready to “retake its place in history” as a cradle for the nation’s great leaders.
The completion of the works signals a new era for the college, which has undergone a significant transformation.
“Revival of a national landmark”
During his inaugural address, President Peña highlighted the college’s deep-rooted significance in the nation’s past. He referred to the institution as an “indisputable protagonist in the reconstruction of Paraguay after the war against the Triple Alliance”. Consequently, its restoration is seen not just as an educational upgrade, but as a revival of a national landmark.
The ceremony celebrated both the architectural renewal, and the preservation of the college’s esteemed legacy as a formative institution for many of the country’s influential figures. The CNC was established on 4 January 1877, and was named after General Bernardino Caballero, hero of the War of the Triple Alliance, and former president of Paraguay.
Details of the National Capital College renovation
The intervention at the college was extensive, encompassing structural, architectural, and functional improvements across the campus. A major focus was placed on ensuring full accessibility throughout the buildings, modernising the facilities for greater efficiency, and preserving the site’s rich patrimonial heritage. This balance ensures that while the college is fit for the future, its historical character remains intact.
Furthermore, the project included the modernisation of sporting areas and common spaces available to the entire educational community. These upgrades provide students with “state-of-the-art facilities for physical education and recreation”. The newly designed common areas also aim to foster a stronger sense of community and collaboration among students, creating a more dynamic and supportive learning environment.
Further investment in sporting facilities
In an announcement during the event, President Peña revealed his administration’s decision to expand the investment in the college’s facilities even further. He confirmed that new funds would be allocated for the development of additional sporting infrastructure. This next phase of development will see the construction of a new sports field, a dedicated football pitch, and a modern athletics track.
The new facilities will allow the college to broaden its athletic programmes and provide students with good resources for training and competition.
A message of inspiration to students
Addressing the students returning to the refurbished classrooms, Peña offered words of encouragement, urging them to build the next chapter in the institution’s long and storied history. He called on them to embrace ambition and contribute to the nation’s progress with their future achievements.
“I want this building renovation to break its barriers and encourage you to dream even bigger, to dream giant,” the president said, directly challenging the students to aim high. He continued by expressing his high expectations for the student body and his optimism for their potential. “We need the best Paraguayans to come from here. I see abundant reasons to have hope.”
