A new chapter for the Dutch community in Paraguay began with the inauguration of the first official Association for Dutch Nationals, held at the Military Cooperative (COFAN). This event aimed to formally establishing the association and present it to Paraguayan authorities, such as the Minister of Tourism of Paraguay, as well as both the Dutch and Paraguayan communities.
The vibrant atmosphere at the Dutch association launch featured traditional Paraguayan food and dances, alongside Dutch cheese and stroopwafels, celebrating a blend of cultures. Stroopwafel is a typical Dutch round cookie, made from two layers of sweet baked dough, held together by syrup filling.
A vision born from community needs
This initiative was inspired by a desire to formalise the support already given to the increasing number of Dutch people settling in Paraguay. The association’s president, Lester Rietveld, explaind he and his colleagues from “Project Paraguay” helped hundreds of people. They perceived the necessity for a formal organisation to represent and support Dutch interests, particularly in areas such as banking and cultural integration. It also aims to foster stronger connections and build bridges between the Netherlands and Paraguay.
To showcase this, Rietveld highlighted the shared red, white, and blue colours of both flags as a symbol of their connection. “We want to make a bridge between the Netherlands and Paraguay. Because we have a lot of similarities,” he stated.
A unique request
The idea for a formal association gained momentum after a unique request from a Dutch couple seeking witnesses for their marriage in Paraguay. The bride, a Paraguayan lawyer, was key in developing the concept. “She came up with the idea of an association,” Rietveld recounted. “I immediately thought this is something, this is good, so we started.”
Rietveld and his wife Anne settled in Paraguay in May 2024. He proudly noted that his nine-month-old son, born in Paraguay, is a Paraguayan national.
Rietveld expressed profound honour and responsibility in leading this initiative. “I feel honoured. I feel responsible for the Dutch people.” Additionally, wondering about what he likes about Paraguay? “Freedom, small governments, good weather, lovely people, families and friends, amistad, lower taxes, and the carne (meat), of course.”

The journey ahead
Future activities for the association include exploring participation in the “Expo” with the Dutch farmers’ network, being present at the Fiesta de Inmigrantes in Hohenau, and organising a Sinterklaas celebration in December for Dutch families. Sinterklaas is a legendary figure based on Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children.
Connecting Dutch nationals in Paraguay will primarily happen through a newsletter, a dedicated website, and a members’ chat. Rietveld hopes to attract active members who will serve as brand ambassadors. And help achieve the vision of improving the quality of life for both Dutch and local Paraguayans.
Documenting the Dutch association journey
A Dutch video team, including a documentary maker for Dutch television, is following Rietveld and his wife for a full year in Paraguay. This documentary will capture their journey, providing an in-depth look at their efforts to establish and lead the new association. It is expected to be released in April 2026.
