In the city of Lambaré, near Asunción, optician’s shop Ullón Optical opened its doors in 2019 under the leadership of optometry graduate Nadia Ullón. Her passion for optics began more than twenty years ago, when she started working as an assistant at her aunt’s optician’s shop.
“I started working empirically, and that is where I fell in love with the profession,” Nadia says. This passion for optics led her to specialise in the field, seeking knowledge beyond what she had learned through hands-on experience. Despite its small size, Ullón Optical has a distinctive hallmark that not all places manage to achieve: high-quality products, and personalised attention.
A passion for optics
Explaining optometry concepts and helping people understand the importance of visual health, is what most excites its founder. Topics such as lens prescriptions and the causes of common vision issues are at the heart of what she loves. “I enjoy explaining things to people, sometimes even with drawings,” says Nadia with an enthusiastic smile.
She emphasises that at least 90 percent of what people learn, comes through vision, making regular eye examinations essential.
Committed care and personalised attention
The optician’s shop offers a wide variety of lenses and frames, including both well-known and lesser-known brands. “We have something for every pocket and budget, from the most economical to the high-end,” says Nadia. “We have metal and plastic frames to suit all preferences.”
Another service offered is frame repair in cases of damage, including reframing, welding for metal frames, and nose pad replacement for certain models. An ophthalmology consultation service is also available within the shop. It costs Gs. 80,000 (around US$10) and includes a complete and thorough examination, including intraocular pressure measurement.
Assisted by her colleague Elisa Cardozo, Ullón Optical is committed to addressing each individual case with the utmost care, ensuring that every customer leaves satisfied.
Ullón Optical: A love for health
Although there are many opticians throughout the metropolitan area, few have someone as passionate about explaining optometry concepts and aesthetics as Nadia Ullón. Her love for the profession is evident in the way she ensures customers feel confident and comfortable when making their choices.
“We help provide a solution not only in terms of aesthetics, because with glasses, the trick is to look good and see well,” Ullón explaines energetically. “Some people have complex prescriptions and do not want heavy, unattractive frames. We inform them about the available materials so that they leave feeling satisfied.”
Ullón Optical prioritises quality over quantity, asking detailed questions in order to help clients make the best possible choice.
Scheduling a home visit
For those who are unable to visit the shop due to time constraints or mobility issues, there is the option to schedule a home visit. The optician brings everything necessary, even to take lens measurements, on a scheduled day. This service covers much of Asunción and surrounding areas.
Ullón Optical also compiles a client database for future reference, which includes their personal details, preferences, dislikes, lens specifications, and frame information. Looking ahead, Ullón Optical plans to acquire more specialised equipment to improve customer service and, eventually, to open a second branch that operates under the same ethical principles as the original.
