Paraguayan Scholars Publish International Research On Inclusive Physical Education

Two Paraguayan doctoral researchers have achieved international recognition after publishing a scientific article on inclusive physical education in an academic journal. Néstor Figueredo Martínez and Germán Martínez Cardozo are currently pursuing a PhD in Education at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona in Spain. Both are supported by the National Scholarship Programme “Carlos Antonio López” (BECAL).

Their recent publication marks an important academic milestone and positions Paraguay within international discussions on inclusive learning.

The article was published in the international scientific journal Fiep Bulletin – Online. Titled “Gymnastics Exhibition: A Didactic Resource for Inclusion in Physical Education”, the study explores group gymnastics performances. These performances can function as a pedagogical strategy to encourage participation, cooperation, and inclusion in physical education classes.

Promoting inclusive physical education

The research examines how collective and expressive physical activities can create learning environments that respect diversity. According to the authors, gymnastics exhibitions can help students feel valued, included, and engaged, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds.

Figueredo explained that he developed the article in close collaboration with Martínez, whose academic focus is inclusive education. By combining their expertise, the researchers analysed how inclusive physical education can become a powerful tool for social integration and meaningful participation.

Martínez noted that the publication forms part of his broader research into transformative teaching practices. He described the opportunity to share their findings internationally as especially significant during his doctoral training in Spain. For both scholars, the work represents not only academic achievement but also a contribution to improving teaching methods.

Academic paths rooted in Paraguay

Néstor Figueredo Martínez is originally from Natalicio Talavera, in the department of Guairá. Figueredo is a teacher of Physical Education and Health and graduated from the National School of Physical Education. He holds a degree in Physical Education and Sports from the Universidad Sudamericana and a Master’s in Educational Research from the Universidad Nacional de Caaguazú. He also completed a Master’s in Education at the Universidad de Navarra through the BECAL programme.

Germán Martínez Cardozo comes from Aguaray Seco, in the district of San Pedro de Ycuamandyyú. He earned degrees in Educational Psychology and Education Sciences from the Universidad Nacional de Asunción and later completed a Master’s in Education at the Universidad de Navarra, also supported by BECAL.

Their publication represents another example of how Paraguayan scholars are contributing to international scientific production. As inclusive physical education continues to gain importance worldwide, studies like this provide practical tools for teachers and policymakers. For Paraguay, the achievement reinforces the global relevance of its researchers and the long-term value of investing in education and academic development.
