Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sisso Lopec visits Paraguay to strengthen diplomatic relations

The President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, received his counterpart from Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sisso Lopec, on an official visit in order to strengthen ties of cooperation that benefit both countries.

“With great satisfaction, with great affection I have had the privilege of receiving the President of Guinea Bissau and the historical importance of this visit,” Peña said in a joint statement.

The president indicated that Paraguay and Guinea-Bissau formalised their diplomatic ties just over a year ago, stating that effective relations are long-standing.

“We are today at a time when from our roles as presidents of our countries, we are determined to take our diplomatic relationship to a very high level, very deep of cooperation in the political field, in the economic and commercial field and of course of our international relations,” he said.

He also highlighted Paraguayan collaboration in peace missions through the United Nations. The trade has already begun, with Paraguay exporting rice to Guinea-Bissau worth about US$1,400,000 in 2023.

“We believe that this is the beginning of other opportunities that can be given and of course we firmly believe in cultural, academic exchange, to which we have also opened the possibility for students from Guinea Bissau to come to Paraguay to train in areas such as veterinary or agriculture, which are clearly areas where Paraguay has made great progress,” he added.

President Embaó thanked the invitation and stressed the importance of good relations between the two countries. “It is very important for Guinea-Bissau to come closer to Paraguay to exchange our experiences,”, he said in a statement. He also mentioned the possibility of signing a political-diplomatic agreement between the chances of both countries.

He also stressed the need for regular consultations between the two countries to meet current global challenges.

The visit of the President Embaló marks a significant milestone in relations between Paraguay and Guinea-Bissau, establishing a path to closer and more productive collaboration in various areas.
