Asunción residents have a unique opportunity to explore the world of natural wellbeing with an upcoming workshop. The initiative will teach participants how to create a medicinal garden at home. Organised by the Experimental Centre for Medicinal Resources, the session, named “The Health Corner”, is designed to guide attendees through every step of establishing and maintaining a garden of medicinal and aromatic plants. The workshop will take place on Sunday 22 March, from 09:00 to 10:30, and will last approximately 90 minutes.
Understanding the concept of a Medicinal Garden
During the session, participants will learn how to prepare the soil, organise their planting space, and cultivate a variety of plants suitable for use in both cooking and natural remedies. A key focus of the workshop is the concept of a medicinal garden, locally known as tekoha in the Guaraní language. This idea encompasses the natural environment surrounding a home. The workshop aims to incorporate native and introduced plants with medicinal, aromatic, and nutritional properties into daily life. According to the organisers, such gardens not only provide practical health benefits but also contribute to improving overall quality of life and fostering a stronger connection with nature.
Learn to grow and “domesticate” your plants
Participants will have the chance to grow and “domesticate” at least ten different species of medicinal and aromatic plants. These plants can serve a dual purpose, enhancing culinary dishes while supporting natural health practices. The organisers emphasise that engaging with plants in this way encourages healthier habits and a greater appreciation of Paraguay’s rich botanical heritage.
Timing could not be better, as the workshop coincides with a favourable period in the agricultural calendar. With the end of summer and the arrival of autumn on 21 March, gardeners can prepare the soil, fertilise planting areas, and plan for new growth in an ideal climate.
Participation and additional benefits
The participation fee is ₲50,000 (approximately US$7), which includes the chance to select and take home some plants to begin a personal garden. Attendees will also be invited to enjoy the natural surroundings of the centre and may request a healthy, antioxidant-rich lunch prepared on-site. Those interested in taking part can register or obtain further information by contacting 0982 416690.
