Restaurant Paraíso: Over 25 Years Of Authentic Chinese Flavours in Asunción

On 14 October 1998, Ji, a chef from Shanghai, and his wife Maribel realised their dream of opening a place that would share authentic Chinese flavours with Paraguay. What began as a modest family project soon became a bridge between cultures, introducing locals to tastes they had never known. From that spark emerged Paraíso, where Shanghai roots and Paraguayan tastes converge in unforgettable harmony.

From experience to independence

Before launching his own venue, Ji had worked in another well-known Chinese establishment in the city, where he refined his culinary skills and learned the demands of the local market. That experience provided him with both the confidence and the determination to pursue independence. Opening his own business allowed him to shape a menu that reflected his heritage while adapting flavours to the Paraguayan palate.

As Administrative Manager and daughter of the founders, Johanna Araujo emphasised that the establishment has always remained true to its roots whilst embracing new trends. She explained that her father’s culinary background gave him the courage to establish the gastronomic landmark, whilst her mother’s warmth shaped its spirit. For her, this culinary legacy is not merely a business but also a symbol of cultural pride.

Conquering the Paraguayan palate

In the early days, convincing locals to try sweet-and-sour flavours was a challenge. According to the Manager, many Paraguayans were hesitant, even suspicious, of dishes they considered unusual. Yet little by little, curiosity prevailed, and soon sweet-and-sour ribs and fried rice became favourites that symbolised the success of the restaurant.

Johanna explained that word-of-mouth played a decisive role in this change. Customers who dared to try the unfamiliar dishes shared their positive experiences, encouraging others to follow. Over time, what was once regarded as strange became an essential part of the dining scene in the Paraguayan capital, with the family-run restaurant leading the way in popularising authentic oriental cuisine.

The culinary experience at Paraíso

The menu today blends tradition and adaptation. Many dishes are prepared according to authentic family recipes, but flavours are fine-tuned for Paraguayan and international guests. Less spice and milder seasonings make the meals accessible whilst retaining their essence. Nevertheless, whenever a diner requests it, the chefs prepare the most traditional versions with all their authentic flavours.

The house special, sweet-and-sour ribs, perfectly captures the spirit of Paraíso: caramelised, savoury, tangy, and unforgettable. Alongside it, fried rice, beef with oyster sauce, spring rolls, and dumplings are among the most popular choices. With options such as rice noodles for gluten-free diners and vegetarian selections, the dining room caters to varied preferences without losing its roots.

Other favourites include chicken with basil, chicken with chilli, and grilled flank steak, dishes that highlight the breadth of the menu. To accompany the meals, the drinks menu features soju, sangria, a selection of wines from Argentina, Chile, and Italy, and of course, the ever-popular beer.

Freshness and quality

One of the key differentiators of this culinary landmark is its commitment to freshness. Ingredients come from trusted suppliers in China, Ciudad del Este, and local producers, carefully checked by nutritionists and technologists. Nothing is reheated; everything is prepared daily, a standard that has earned the restaurant loyalty and trust.

This dedication is evident in the final product: vibrant dishes full of texture and authentic flavour. For the Manager and the founding team, ensuring quality is not only a business necessity but also a way of honouring both their cultural heritage and customer expectations.

Atmosphere and authenticity

Dining at Paraíso is not only about food but also about immersion in Chinese culture. The décor is carefully curated with lanterns, paintings, and tableware brought directly from China, creating an environment that feels both exotic and welcoming. Plants, a personal passion of Maribel, add warmth and life to every corner of the main branch.

The next chapter

Despite its growth, this beloved establishment remains a family-driven project with a clear vision for the future. Plans include expanding the central branch, enhancing its distinctive garden-like interior with even more plants, and continuing to introduce small innovations on the menu whilst preserving customer favourites.

For Johanna and her family, Paraíso is not merely a restaurant but a space where bonds grow stronger around the table. Guests return time and again, drawn by the genuine warmth that fills every corner. With its authentic recipes, inviting atmosphere, and more than twenty-five years of history, Paraíso continues to be a landmark in Asunción, a true refuge for those who find happiness in sharing good food.
