Pink And Purple Magic In Paraguay: Lotus Season Creates Serene Escape In Ñu Guasu Park

Just ten minutes from Paraguay’s Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, spectacular lotus flowers bloom continuously from December to February in the city of Luque. Nestled within Ñu Guasu Park, Taiwan Square (Plaza Taiwán) features a tranquil pond filled with these striking tropical Asian lotus flowers. Visitors are drawn by the vibrant colours and peaceful atmosphere, making it one of the city’s most beautiful seasonal attractions.

The park offers an escape from urban life, with shaded paths, a scenic bridge, and benches perfect for quiet reflection. The combination of nature and architecture encourages visitors to slow down, walk mindfully, and enjoy the serene surroundings.

Taiwan Square: A symbol of friendship

The square is notable for its authentic Taiwanese architectural style. Standing as a living symbol of the long-standing diplomatic alliance between Paraguay and Taiwan, Taiwan Square is also known as Taiwan Island (Isla de Taiwán). Such a place is a landscaped area located on the island of the first lake, forming part of the Paseo de los Lagos. The project includes a 10-metre-long access bridge, benches, and walking paths, featuring elements of oriental architecture. These features combine to create a space where visitors can enjoy both natural beauty and cultural design.

The lotus flowers were first planted in 1995 and bloomed successfully for the first time in 1996. From that moment, the seasonal blooming produced remarkable results: large flowers in shades of pink and purple, captivating all who visited. These lotus flowers are commonly referred to as Lotus FX, a hybrid species distinguished by its size and visual impact. Often called the “queen of lotuses,” Lotus FX blooms are significantly larger than common lotus varieties, adding drama and elegance to the park’s pond.

Nature and lotus flowers through symbolism

Like any non-native species, the lotus flowers required time to adapt to the Paraguayan ecosystem. Over the years, flowers have achieved a harmonious balance, integrating naturally with surrounding vegetation and native plant life. This coexistence highlights the park’s careful design and ecological attention.

Ñu Guasu Park itself was officially inaugurated in May 2006. The ceremony included the then President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Chen Shui-bian, who participated in a symbolic tree-planting event celebrating the alliance between Taiwan and Paraguay. A cypress tree represented Taiwan, while the Lapacho tree symbolised Paraguay.

Across many cultures, lotus flowers are powerful symbols of purity, spiritual awakening, enlightenment, rebirth, and resilience. The flowers’ ability to rise and bloom beautifully from muddy waters makes them a metaphor for overcoming adversity and emerging stronger and more beautiful.

Visiting Ñu Guasu Park

For those seeking reflection or a meaningful start to the year, Ñu Guasu Park, located in the city of Luque, is an ideal destination. The park is open daily from 05:00 to 21:30, offering plenty of time for early morning visits or evening walks.

Walking paths, benches, a scenic bridge, and the striking Taiwanese architecture provide a full sensory experience.
