Madrid Opens Doors For Paraguayan Authors

A remarkable opportunity has opened for Paraguayan authors to elevate their work on an international stage, as the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) in Madrid invites applications from Latin American and Caribbean writers.

The programme offers a three-month residency in one of Europe’s cultural capitals, hosted by AECID, Festival Eñe, Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos, and the esteemed Casa de Velázquez in Madrid.

Participation in Festival Eñe

Running from September 20 to December 20, 2025, the programme invites one author to immerse themselves in three months of uninterrupted creative exploration in one of Europe’s most culturally vibrant cities. With € 1,000 monthly support, a round-trip flight, and residence at Casa de Velázquez, the material worries of daily life are stripped away, allowing literature to bloom.

Beyond the logistical generosity lies something far greater: visibility. For writers from Paraguay, a country whose literary wealth remains underrepresented on global shelves, this is a stage from which to be heard. Participation in Festival Eñe, one of the most important literary events in the Spanish-speaking world which will be held from November 8 to 30 in Madrid and Malaga, is more than a calendar mark: it’s an open door to editors, readers, and literary agents across Europe and the Americas.

A chance to shine for Paraguayan Authors

For Paraguay, whose rich literary tradition often remains overshadowed globally, this residency is a chance to shine. Applicants must write in Spanish, reside in Latin America or the Caribbean, and have at least one traditionally published work. The deadline for submissions is 9 June 2025 at 10 PM.

This initiative is more than a residency; it is a platform for Paraguayan voices to resonate worldwide. Writers from Asunción to Encarnación are urged to seize this moment to dream bigger, write boldly, and carry their nation’s stories to the heart of the global literary conversation. For more information and participation, check the Festival Eñe’s website.

In the last year, Paraguayan authors have gained more visibility at the international level. In literature centred on indigenous communities, the Guaraní language shone at the Buenos Aires Book Fair. A book about the Ayoreo community also won the Award for Literary Creation in Indigenous Languages Cenzontle.
