Celebrating Mestizo Heritage: This Was Villarrica’s Festival Of The Races 2025

In the Paraguayan city of Villarrica, Guairá Department, the Festival of the Races 2025 (Festival de la Raza) was held to display the region’s diversity. This event is considered one of Paraguay’s most significant cultural showcases. This aimed to transform the city’s artistic tradition into a truly inclusive spectacle that honours its mestizo heritage. Cultural events of the festival were held on 10, 11, 19, and 24 October 2025 around the city.

The 42nd edition of the festival celebrated a historic milestone by offering free admission to all its events. However, the festival encouraged attendees to donate non-perishable food items. Those were collected and distributed to vulnerable families. This spirit of solidarity reflects the community’s historical resilience. The event was made possible thanks to the support of local businesses and municipal authorities. Rooted in community development, it originated over four decades ago to raise funds for the reconstruction of the Municipal Palace.

Four days of extraordinary events

The festivities extended throughout October, with a full calendar of events that built anticipation for the main concert. This programme showcased the fusion of indigenous and European influences that defines Villarrica. A “Pre-Festival” on 10 October served as a platform for emerging local artists, celebrating the region’s enduring artistic creativity. The following day, a “Dance Night” was held, featuring performances that honour both Guaraní traditions and European folk influences.

On 19 October, the Festival of the Races 2025 held the election of the “Muse of Ybytyruzú”. Nazira Velázquez Aguirre was crowned the Muse of Ybytyruzú. Adriana Vera was named “Amada Inefable” and Glenda Pereira “Panambi Verá de la Simpatia”.

The Festival of the Races 2025 culminated with the “Giant Night” concert at the Club Cerro Corá. The concert featured an impressive array of musical acts. The line-up celebrated the city’s blended identity, with performers embracing the Guaraní and Spanish roots. The night was filled with energetic cumbia from Marilina and the rhythms of the local favourite Grupo Generación de Villarrica.

A diverse range of acts, including romantic boleros from the Trío San Valentín and the traditional sound of over 30 harps played by the Ensemble Amigos del Arpa, celebrated the country’s rich musical traditions. The vibrant folk dancing of the Folklore Ensemble Arriero Katupyry further highlighted the region’s rich cultural tapestry.

Contributors of the year

During the Giant Night, the Festival of the Races 2025 honoured three distinguished citizens for their contributions to local culture. The Panambi de Plata award was presented to Antonio César García, Sara Victoria Velázquez Vera, and Pedro Juan Paredes Argüello. This award recognises their efforts in art, education, and promotion of the Guairá identity. This annual tribute celebrates those who help preserve and evolve the city’s unique cultural fabric.

The Festival of the Races 2025 has cemented its place as a cornerstone of Paraguayan culture. Its edition, with its free admission and spirit of solidarity, is set to be remembered as a truly historic occasion, celebrating the art and rich traditions born from the city’s Spanish-Guaraní heritage.
