The Paraguayan government and the Eurofront Program, financed by the European Union, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the creation of the Migration Intelligence Network (RIM). This initiative seeks to balance security and mobility at borders, in order to confront organised crime through the exchange of information and risk analysis.
The agreement was signed by authorities of the Ministry of the Interior, the National Intelligence Secretariat, the National Anti-Drug Secretariat, the Secretariat for the Prevention of Money or Property Laundering, the National Directorate of Civil Aviation; National Police and National Directorate of Migrations.
The director of Migrations, Jorge Kronawetter, highlighted the importance of this Network, while the representative of the European Union, stressed that Paraguay will be a pioneer in the region in implementing this system. This is the third network formed by Eurofront, after its success in Ecuador and Colombia, where it contributed to the capture of organized crime leaders.
Eurofront Program: Immigration Intelligence Training
Likewise, an inter-institutional training on immigration intelligence culminated, with the participation of experts from Ecuador and the European Union, promoting international cooperation.
Paraguay has already joined the Athens Network, an initiative developed under the Eurofront program, inspired by the Athens Point of the Spanish National Police, in which 24/7 verification centers are implemented in each country, for the exchange of alerts and timely detection of false documents.
This in turn allows monitoring other cross-border crimes associated with this criminal practice such as human trafficking, migrant smuggling, child abduction or terrorism.
The member states of the Athens Network verify travel documents in real time, through permanent cooperation between the countries’ immigration security agencies.
Increasingly, more people from around the world are moving to Paraguay, and this latest move from the Paraguayan government signals its intent to make sure that the country is attracting the people that it wants to attract, whilst tightening up the processes to reject and prevent those it does not want from moving here – such as dangerous criminals from other countries.
