Saltos del Monday – pronounced more like Hawaii than the day of the week – is located in Presidente Franco, just south of Ciudad del Este, in the Department of Alto Paraná. Starting out west, the Monday River flows in the Paraná River, getting in close to the border with Argentina. The small falls are located in between, with an eastbound stream. The “saltos” might not be as big as the internationally renowned one a couple of kilometres east, but they are still interesting and worth a visit.
The park allows people to walk on a single forest path for around 10 minutes before following the river and arriving precisely at the falls. After you have seen the Saltos del Monday, you continue on the forest path to return to the entrance. Even if you take your time, you visit the falls in less than one hour. It takes around 45 minutes in total. It is not grandiose, but it still offers an interesting experience you cannot get everywhere. Yes, it is not the only saltos in the area, but it is one more accessible, as it is located on the Paraguayan side, with no border and no waiting time stuck in the traffic. It is also more affordable, as fewer people know about and visit it.
If you have a “Cédula” from Paraguay, the price for entry to Saltos del Monday is 40K Guaraníes, or if you prefer, around five dollars or euros. If you are still waiting on your cards or just visiting Paraguay, you are paying slightly over 94K Guaraníes, or 12 dollars, 11 euros. The foreign amount is listed in American dollars (USD) as it is considered an internationally recognised currency. They also have special prices for the children. The kids are paying 25K Guaraníes, or three dollars or euros with their Paraguayan identity card. Without one, they pay slightly over 47K Guaraníes, or six dollars or euros.
The park is open each day from seven in the morning to seven at night. On special occasions, it is open from eight in the morning to six at night. They advertise in advance if the schedule is about to change. It is often related to the water level and keeping the area the tidiest in Presidente Franco. It is better to go early if you want the park to be less crowded. It also means taking a taxi, Uber, or Bolt instead of a bus from the transit system, unless you are driving to the falls. If you are coming from outside the region, like Encarnación for example, you take Route 6 and switch to Route 7 later. When reaching the urban area, you turn right on Saltos del Monday Street. If you are coming from Asunción, you go on Route 2 and drive on it for hours before arriving in the area. You then take Route 7 south and continue until reaching Guaraní Avenue. You drive on it for a couple of minutes and take Route 7 again eastbound (Argentina direction). Lastly, go south on Saltos del Monday Street.
