The President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, said that the inclusion of Paraguay at the G20 in the “Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty” is a sign of its commitment to continue implementing policies that lead to the eradication of poverty.
The global alliance is an initiative promoted by Brazil during the G20 Summit and has the support of 82 countries and 66 international organisations, including Paraguay.
In his presentation at the summit with the world’s leading economies, the Paraguayan president highlighted the country’s progress in reducing poverty and extreme poverty over the past 20 years, which fell from 57.7 to 22.7% and from 16.2 to 4.9%, respectively.
“I want to reduce poverty even further, eradicate extreme poverty and chronic child malnutrition,” he said.
The president also outlined the social initiatives implemented by his government: the “Zero Hunger in Schools” program, which provides daily meals to 450,000 children, and “Che Róga Porã,” which allows citizens to access decent housing.
Peña Nieto is participating in the G20 Summit through a special invitation extended by Brazilian President Luis Inácio “Lula” da Silva, which is the first time that Paraguay has been represented at this event.
