Asunción is a city that surprises with its energy, its vibrant culture and the warmth of its people.

In this article we seek to make known the characteristics and benefits of the beautiful city of Asunción, so that the reader can imagine how the most emblematic tourist of the city are, as well as a short review of the rich history of the monuments such as the pantheon of heroes, the house of independence, and others. Asunción, the “Mother of cities” a hidden gem in the heart of South America, capital of Paraguay. A destination that holds the secrets of the history of Paraguay. A city where every corner has a story to tell and a tradition to share.

The city stands out for the warm welcome given by the inhabitants to tourists, showing kindness and performing acts of charity for those people who give them the opportunity to get to know more about the corners of this beautiful city.

The History of Palma Street

One of the most emblematic streets of the city of Asunción is definitely Palma street. Founded on April 1, 1849, it is an important street downtown Asunción.

The word “Palmear” has been the protagonist of multiple generations who were looking for activities to spend their afternoons in the different emblematic places located on this street.

The monuments found on this popular street in downtown Asunción transport you on a journey into the past with their picturesque appearances, so much so that every corner has a story to tell.

The waterfront of Asuncion

Asuncion’s waterfront is one of the most visited places by “Asunciónians” and tourists, where nature and modernity meet. This extensive promenade along the Paraguay river, offers an ideal space to enjoy outdoor activities, from hiking and cycling to picnic afternoons or sports.

With its amazing view of the river and the city, the waterfront of Asunción has become an ideal place for families in Asunción. In addition, during sunset, the sky is tinged with radiant, reddish colors. Anyone who enjoys outdoor activities will be amazed by the welcoming climate that the waterfront of Asunción offers.

Pantheon of Heroes

Definitely the Pantheon of heroes is a place that is full of history, there rest the bodies of those who were once the heroes of Paraguay. People who gave everything in life for this beautiful country to prosper.

In the Pantheon of heroes you will find writings even in English that tell in detail all the history of this building, as well as storiesof the life of Don Carlos Antonio Lopez (First constitutional president), Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez, Marshal Jose Feliz Estigarribia (Hero and victor in the Chaco war against Bolivia) and the unknown soldier, whose representation represents all the héroes. soldiers who died in defense of the homeland, but whose names have been lost to history.

The House of Independence

The house of independence is one of the most important historical sites in Paraguay. This charming museum, an old colonial house built in 1772, was the meeting point for secret meetings of Paraguayan heroes who planned the country’s independence form Spanish rule. Among the main leaders we can mention Pedro Juan Caballero, Fulgencio Yegros, Jose Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia, among many others.

Located in front of the “Plaza de Armas”, it is an essential point of reference to know the architectural and religious root of Asunción.

What to eat in Asunción?

Lido Bar

El Lido Bar is an emblematic place where Paraguayan gastronomy is appreciated. Founded in 1953, this traditional restaurant has maintained its essence throughout the years. Among the specialties of the house are the traditional dishes such as the Paraguayan soup, the authentic pirakaldo (fish broth) and the typical and inevitable meat empanada accompanied by its spongy and delicious homemade bread that traditionally the locals come to make a sandwich, called “Sandwich of empanada”.

Bolsi

On the streets of Asunción, you can listen to the voices of the locals who tell of their experiences with this emblematic place.

In the heart of the town of Asunción, El Bolsi offers with its impressive dishes to anyone who wants to try the tradition of Paraguay represented in a dish, an authentic experience as it has been doing since 1960.

Among its most amazing dishes we can find the “pirakaldo” (fish broth), dipping a piece of bread in this delicious dish of food, is a tradition and an experience full of flavor that should not be missed; the chipa guazú, one of the traditional dishes of Paraguay which, definitely, is a must try dish to taste what Paraguay has to offer when talking about gastronomy; and the meat empanada which is best enjoyed with a soda and a piece of bread.

El Café de Acá

El Café de acá is a pleasant corner of Asunción that combines the charm of Paraguayan tradition with a modern touch. Located in the Carmelitas neighborhood, this cafe has gained a lot of popularity among locals and foreigners looking to enjoy a relaxing moment and an experience full of flavor.
