Asunción’s largest and liveliest market, Mercado 4 (pronounced “mercado cuatro”), is located in the Silvio Pettirossi neighborhood. On 7th May 2024, Asunción Mayor Oscar Rodríguez celebrated the 82nd anniversary of this market as the ‘the core of workers’. Since 1942, this place has become the largest, and most vibrant market in the Paraguayan capital, where for locals it is the go-to place to get whatever they are looking for.
Step into the market and you are greeted by a lively atmosphere where almost everything is for sale, from household appliances to clothing, toys, vegetables, fruits, meat, spices, and a wide variety of local foods. It is like walking through a bustling bazaar, with new surprises around every corner. Despite the wide selection of goods, this place is more than just a shopping destination; it is also a crossroads of daily lives for local people and the richness of Paraguayan culture.
Affordable Prices and Authentic Paraguayan Cuisine
The price range is generally considered to be very affordable, and cheaper than supermarket chains. They range from G2,500 (approximately USD 0.33) for a pineapple to G5,000 (USD 0.66) for a bag of tomatoes. You can also sample some good Paraguayan food if you visit at lunchtime. Prices range from G7,000 to G15,000 (USD 1-2), depending on the restaurant and dish.
Spreading international awareness through the film ‘7 Cajas’
There is a film called ‘7cajas’ (seven boxes) that brought Mercado 4 international recognition. The film, shot by Paraguayans Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schemboli, was the first Paraguayan movie to win several awards and was shown in cinemas around the world. The movie depicts the real lives of many of the people living here.
