Asunción is preparing to host one of the most important educational and technological events of the 2026: the First Lego League (FLL). This event is an international competition that combines science, robotics, engineering, and teamwork. The FLL aims to introduce children and young people to the world of technology in a fun and meaningful way.
The event will take place on Friday 13 February at the event hall of Paseo La Galería. First Lego League is held from 8:00 to 16:00, with free admission for the general public.
The First Lego League is a competition with global impact
The First Lego League is organised by FIRST, an international organisation present in 109 countries, with more than 40,000 participants worldwide. Within FIRST, FLL is one of its most recognized programs due to its strong educational focus.
Paraguay has been part of this competition since 2016. Additionally, since 2018 the country has officially organised the First Lego League as a partner. Each year, the events is bringing together approximately 40 national teams.
Learning by doing: science, robotics, and creativity
The competition of the First Lego League challenges teams to develop key 21st century skills. Participants must create a scientific project based on an annual theme, applying real methods of research, analysis, and presentation – just as a scientist or engineer would.
There are two main categories:
- Explore (children aged 6 to 10): focused on scientific exploration and the presentation of a project related to the annual theme.
- Challenge (youth aged 9 to 16): includes a scientific project and a robotics competition, where teams must design, program, and build an autonomous robot capable of completing different challenges on a course.
The Challenge category represents a true test of mechanical and software engineering, combining programming, design, logic, and collaborative work.
This year’s theme invites participants to explore archaeology, investigating how ancient societies are studied through what is found beneath the ground. The goal is for students to understand the past using modern scientific tools, connecting history, technology, and critical thinking.

More than a competition
Teams prepare throughout the entire year, developing not only technical knowledge but also skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving. The impact is clear: “The sparkle in the children’s eyes is incredible,” says Gianpaolo Ficorilli, founder of Espacios de Ser (2007) and one of the main promoters of the event in Paraguay.
According to Gianpaolo, the First Lego League allows students to engage with the technology, programming, and engineering that are part of everyday life. This is encouraging deep and meaningful learning through play.
Paraguay on the international stage
The team that places first will have the opportunity to compete in the world finals in the United States. In addition, the teams that place second and third will receive invitations to participate in Open events, international competitions held alongside the world finals.
A call to society
The First Lego League also delivers a clear message for the country: the importance of raising the level of engineering and technical education in Paraguay. In a world where technology is present in every aspect of life, educational initiatives like this are key to training future professionals and leaders.
The FLL also relies heavily on the support of volunteers. “Thanks to our volunteers, this event is possible,” emphasises Gianpaolo. Those interested in applying can do so through by contacting Espacios de Ser on Instagram. People can also contact First Lego League Paraguay on Instagram.
