The city of San Bernardino is preparing to host the Ulala Backyard Ultra 2025 challenge, one of the most demanding and unique ultra-distance events in the world. The race will be held at the Club Náutico Puerta del Lago on 15 August. The venue offers a lakeside setting that promises both beauty and challenge for what is expected to be an unforgettable endurance event.
What is a Backyard Ultra?
A Backyard Ultra is a resistance race that differs from traditional ultra distance races due to its elimination format. Instead of completing a set distance, runners must complete a circuit of approximately 6.706 km (4.167 miles) every hour.
Once the lap is completed, runners can use the remaining time to rest, eat, hydrate, or recover. However, when the next hour begins, all runners must start the next lap. This cycle is repeated until there is only one runner left capable of starting a new lap.
This format requires not only physical resistance but also a solid strategy and a high level of mental strength. Participants must manage fatigue, nutrition, hydration, and rest carefully in order to last as long as possible and become the “last one standing”.

Ulala Backyard Ultra set for San Bernardino
To take part in the Ulala Backyard Ultra 2025, you must complete the registration form, which is in Spanish. In addition to basic information, you must provide your blood type. You may also include your shirt size if you want to receive one.
There are four race categories:
- 2 laps (13.4 kilometres)
- 4 laps (26.8 kilometres)
- 8 laps
- Infinite (Last Man Standing).
Prices vary depending on the number of laps, individual or team registration, and whether you choose to receive the official event shirt. Fees range from Gs. 160,000 to 400,000 (approximately US$20 to US$55). The price differs if you want to compete as a team, instead of solo.
First training session: a taste of the format
A free official training was held earlier this month at Ñu Guasu Park in Luque. The training session allowed participants to familiarise themselves with the format of the Backyard Ultra. During the session, runners were invited to complete up to three laps at their own pace, following the format used in the race.
In addition, the organisation provided a circuit tracker and guidance during the first lap to simulate the real competition. Although this was just a training run, the activity sought to recreate the atmosphere of camaraderie and effort that characterises the event.
