Olimpia Kings have secured the 2025 Paraguayan National Basketball League title, defeating San José 92-80 to claim the decisive fourth victory in the series. This win breaks a six-year drought for Olimpia, bringing them back to the top of Paraguayan basketball.
The Kings controlled the decisive game from the outset, never relinquishing the lead. Their solid and efficient play, particularly from long range, secured a decisive victory, breaking San José’s streak of titles, and adding a 35th star to Olimpia’s illustrious basketball history.
Olimpia Kings’ early lead
The visitors started strong, with Alejandro Peralta leading the attack. Olimpia built a double-digit lead in the first quarter, sinking six three-pointers, which accounted for 18 of their 28 points in the period. The first quarter ended 28-15 in Olimpia’s favour.
In the second quarter, San José rallied briefly, prompting Olimpia’s coach, Javier Martínez, to call a timeout. Substitutions by Jorge Martínez and Pablo Espinoza revitalised Olimpia’s offence, with Martínez scoring and Espinoza providing key assists. Olimpia extended their lead to 19 points, going into halftime at 55-36.
San José’s fightback
Olimpia continued their strong performance early in the third quarter, pushing their lead to over 20 points. San José then tightened their defence and found their offensive rhythm, primarily through Fernando Dose. San José won the third quarter but still trailed 73-61.
The final quarter saw Olimpia start with errors and turnovers. San José capitalised, reducing the deficit to just five points with four minutes remaining. However, Peralta responded with another three-pointer, restoring Olimpia’s double-digit lead and effectively sealing the victory.
Record champions extending the lead
This latest title further cements Olimpia Kings as the most successful team in Paraguayan basketball history, with 35 titles. San José is trailing with 18. Behind ‘the Big Two’, Libertad follows with 13 titles, and Sol de América has won 11. Ciudad Nueva (10 titles), Rowing (4). Cerro Porteño (3), Guaraní (2), Nacional (1 title) also lifted the trophy.
