On 21 February 2026, the Paraguayan Disc Golf Association (APDG) was created. The sport has been steadily growing in the country, largely thanks to Swedish professional player and tournament director Thor Wallgren. The formal establishment of the Paraguayan Disc Golf Association marks Paraguay’s first official organisation dedicated to the sport.
Wallgren began playing disc golf in 2014 and is a certified tournament director by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA). He moved to Paraguay to live in a different climate and establish a base outside Sweden. Now, he serves as one of the leaders of the Paraguayan Disc Golf Association. His long-standing goal has been to expand appreciation for the sport in the country. The creation of the association confirms the discipline’s continuous growth nationwide.
Official foundation of the Paraguayan Disc Golf Association

The founding meeting of the Paraguayan Disc Golf Association took place at a café in Asunción, which provided one of its conference rooms free of charge. During the 90-minute session, members approved the association’s mission and confirmed a board of directors composed of seven members and three substitutes.
According to its founding statement, the APDG aims to promote the growth of disc golf in Paraguay while supporting members in both competitive and recreational development. Furthermore, the association also highlights the importance of positive conduct during play, emphasising honesty, sportsmanship, and self-control. All of these are core values of the sport.
What is disc golf?
Disc golf is a precision sport played in a format similar to traditional golf. Instead of hitting a ball into a hole, players throw a flying disc into a metal basket fitted with chains. The objective is to complete each hole in the fewest possible throws. Courses are typically set up in public parks and natural areas, incorporating trees, elevation, and obstacles to increase technical difficulty. A standard course includes nine or 18 holes, and players use different types of discs depending on distance and shot control.
Moreover, one of the sport’s defining features is its accessibility. Equipment costs are relatively low, most courses are free to use, and players keep their own scores, reinforcing a culture based on trust and fair play.
Globally, disc golf has experienced steady growth over the past decade, particularly in North America and Europe. In Latin America, the sport remains in a developmental stage but is gaining visibility through grassroots initiatives and community-led projects. With the creation of the first Paraguayan Disc Golf Association, the sport gains not only visibility but also a formal structure through which players can organise games and meetings.
From community play to formal structure

Following the formal assembly, participants continued their usual Saturday routine by playing a round at Ñu Guasú Park. This is one of the main locations where the local community regularly gathers to practise the sport.
The association confirmed that anyone interested in trying disc golf is welcome to join. The club provides discs free of charge for beginners and encourages open participation through direct contact via WhatsApp.
A new chapter for Paraguayan sport
The creation of the Paraguayan Disc Golf Association represents a structural step forward for the discipline in Paraguay. With an official board in place, the organisation can now focus on promoting the sport, organising activities, and working towards greater institutional recognition.
The foundation of the APDG signals the arrival of disc golf as a formally organised sport in Paraguay. In addition, this expands the country’s sporting landscape. Also, it offers a new recreational and competitive alternative for players of all ages.
