At just 21, Paraguayan athlete Fiorella Núñez is competing in beach volleyball at the ASU2025 Junior Pan American Games. Inspired by her grandmother, a former amateur player, Fiorella began playing at the age of seven and made her international debut at thirteen. For her, competing is both an honour and a duty, carrying her nation’s flag on home soil, with matches this week.
After a succesful first day on Tuesday 18 August, Fiorella and her partner Denisse Álvarez compete on 19 August for a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Early beginnings and inspiration
The young star’s passion for sport was nurtured during her childhood. Watching her grandmother play instilled in her a love for the game, first on indoor courts and later on the sand.
“I played indoor volleyball because of my grandmother,” Fiorella Núñez shares with The Asunción Times. “I followed in her footsteps, and when I was called to join the national beach team, I fell in love with it and remained.”
Her competitive spirit grew as she participated in both local, and international tournaments, achieving podium finishes across South America. “My greatest achievements were qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, winning two gold and two silver medals in the South American senior circuit this year, and becoming champion at the Rosario 2022 South American Games.”
The games ahead for Fiorella Núñez
Preparing for the Junior Pan American Games has been a journey marked by resilience. “The greatest obstacle was not merely physical, but mental. There were moments when doubts outweighed fatigue. Remaining steadfast without losing motivation was one of my greatest challenges.”
In beach volleyball, teams are composed of just two players, making trust and coordination essential. Her bond with partner Denisse Alvarenga is another source of strength. “We have developed a very strong connection after many tournaments together. We understand each other very well, and the defeats and victories we have shared have built a relationship based on respect and communication.”

More than just a sport
For Fiorella, beach volleyball is more than competition; it is a way of life. “This sport teaches fundamental values such as teamwork, discipline, communication, and resilience. Since there are only two players on the court, you learn to trust your partner, and take responsibility for every play.”
As the Games draw near, her focus is on making the most of the competition and embracing its challenges. “What I hope for most, is to enjoy the moment, interact with athletes from other countries, be part of Team Paraguay, and experience the camaraderie that such a competition creates.”
A legacy of inspiration
Fiorella’s journey mirrors that of many young Paraguayan athletes who, through determination and passion, rise to represent their country on the international stage. One such example is Blas Romero Flecha, a 19-year-old archer from Caacupé. His path to the Junior Pan American Games began with a modest bet of just 60 cents, yet it propelled him to compete at the highest levels.
These stories exemplify the spirit of the ASU2025 Games, where athletes not only showcase their talents, but also embody the resilience and dedication that inspire future generations. As Paraguay hosts this prestigious event, it stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to nurturing young talent, and fostering a legacy of sporting excellence.
