Paraguay is set to experience a historic moment, hosting the World Rally Championship (WRC), an event projected to reach over 56 million people by television and streaming across 106 countries. The rally, expected to attract more than 250,000 spectators, participants and visitors, will showcase Paraguay to a global audience.
Paraguay debuts on the FIA World Rally Championship calendar with the WRC Rally of Paraguay taking place in the Itapúa region from 28 to 31 August. The rally will showcase four world champions alongside Paraguayan drivers, such as Diego Domínguez Jr., current WRC3 champion, Fabrizio Zaldívar, two-time FIA-Codasur champion, and Agustín Alonso, the last champion of the Paraguayan National Championship.
Unprecedented international media coverage
The international media presence will be substantial. One television crew alone comprises around 70 people, and around 200 foreign journalists are anticipated. “Our work is to ensure and provide all the needs of the international media covering the rally,” noted Lluisa Torras, international press officer for the rally’s organisation in Paraguay, in an interview with Paraguay TV.
Torras emphasised the globally high standards demanded by international media, requiring information not only about the competition itself but also about Paraguay, its people and its culture. “We are talking about around 56 million people who will see the Rally of Paraguay, and many will get to know the country through iconic images such as the red earth, and the competing cars.”
Showcasing Paraguay’s rally heritage
Luis Acosta, national press officer, highlighted Paraguay’s strengthening reputation as a rallying nation: “With this event, we are in the world spotlight; Paraguay is positioning itself within international motorsports.”
Acosta reported that a modern press room has been set up at the Shopping Costanera in Encarnación, equipped with internet access, and spaces for interviews with the drivers. At the local level, 46 Paraguayan journalists are already accredited, following a preparation process initiated since the event’s announcement.
A unique opportunity for Paraguay
The WRC Rally of Paraguay will not only be a high-level competition, but also a unique opportunity to showcase the cultural richness, hospitality, and sporting passion of a country accelerating towards the future. The event promises to leave a lasting impression on the global audience, enhancing Paraguay’s international profile and its identity within the world of motorsports.
