Yumi Kikuchi: Paraguayan Who Led NASA Project Awarded Masters From US University

Yumi Kikuchi, a young Paraguayan from Capiatá, is among the more than 2,100 students graduating with a postgraduate degree from Wichita State University in the spring of 2025. The institution is renowned for its leadership in innovation and research in the United States.

In an interview published by her university, Kikuchi shared that she pursued a Master’s in Innovation Design and stood out as co-leader of the student team in the NASA SUITS (Spacesuit User Interface Technologies for Students) challenge—an initiative aimed at developing augmented reality technology solutions to support future space missions to Mars.

In May 2024, Yumi and her team represented Wichita State University at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, presenting a functional prototype of interfaces for smart space suits. “It was an incredible hands-on experience that combined innovation, collaboration and real-world impact,” she expressed.

A high-school graduate in San Lorenzo, and holder of a degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Mechatronics from the National University of Asunción (UNA), Yumi began her U.S. university journey through a student exchange made possible by the National Scholarship Program (BECAL). “I discovered how much the university has to offer, from academic resources to a supportive learning environment. After gaining some work experience, I decided to return to pursue my master’s degree to deepen my knowledge in innovation management, agile methodologies and design thinking,” she explained.

Yumi also founded Kuñatech, an organisation that promotes women’s empowerment in the tech field in Paraguay—a project she plans to continue strengthening after graduation. “I’m committed to helping it overcome challenges, expand its reach and strengthen its impact. Wherever I go, I aspire to build community and foster inclusive, collaborative environments.”

Kikuchi has some advice for other students: “Take chances. Life is an experiment, and college is the perfect time to explore, get involved and discover what truly excites you. Don’t be afraid to try new things, step out of your comfort zone and pursue opportunities that challenge you.”
