Paraguay’s Civil Registry announced the large-scale, free community wedding event in Asunción on Saturday, 4 October 2025, starting at 09:00. The event at the National Sports Secretariat Arena is part of the national campaign “Paraguay Marries – United by Love”, Protected by Law (Paraguay se casa – Unidos por amor, protegidos por la ley). The aim is to remove financial and bureaucratic barriers to marriage, and promoting the legal protection of the family as a societal cornerstone.
The Paraguay Marries campaign recently received national interest declarations from both the Senate and Chamber of Deputies. This highlights its significance as a public policy initiative.
Record number of couples expected
Around 3,320 couples registered for civil marriage during the Paraguay Marries campaign. In Asunción and Central alone, more than 1,500 couples registered, with a total of approximately 5,000 witnesses and family members. While the Asunción event serves as the main ceremony, similar events are taking place throughout the country’s departments. These ceremonies offer thousands of Paraguayan families the opportunity to formalise their unions free of charge, with full legal backing.
The campaign comes at a time when marriage rates in Paraguay are declining. Ministry of Justice figures show marriages dropped from over 20,800 in 2017 to 17,568 in 2024. In the first half of 2025, only around 6,500 weddings have been recorded, while divorces surpassed 2,000 last year. These trends, combined with Paraguay’s declining fertility rates, highlight the importance of public efforts to support marital stability, and strengthen the family as the cornerstone of society.
Nationwide impact of Paraguay Marries
The initiative’s expansion beyond Asunción demonstrates its broad reach and commitment to addressing the needs of diverse Paraguayan communities. By providing readily accessible and legally sound marriage services, the campaign aims to remove systemic obstacles that many couples may face when trying to formalise their relationships. Following the registration period, more than 17 mass weddings are planned across the country, with approximately 25,000 people expected to participate in this grand celebration.
The campaign underscores the importance of legal marriage in securing families’ rights and social standing. Formalising a union provides couples and their families with crucial legal protections, impacting areas such as inheritance, healthcare decisions and property ownership.
