Paraguay Infrastructure Boost: New Bridge And Airport Roadworks

Two major infrastructure projects have been launched in Luque and the Greater Asunción area. The works aim to enhance urban mobility, support freight logistics, and reduce congestion in high-traffic zones through the construction of a new bridge over the Arroyo Itay and the upgrading of access routes to the airport and northern regions.

Strengthening Paraguay’s infrastructure for connectivity

The improvements include motorway-style carriageways, pedestrian pavements, bus bays, street lighting, and drainage systems. These upgrades are designed to accommodate increasing traffic volumes and to improve overall road conditions in key areas of the capital.

The airport corridor in Asunción will be transformed with four new lanes and parallel collector roads. The existing route will remain operational while the new alignment is constructed separately in order to minimise disruption during the works.

A strategic component

Construction of the new Itay bridge began in June 2025 and is currently in its initial phase. Activities include land clearance, drainage installation, and the placement of foundational pilings. Despite the ongoing work, traffic in the area has not yet been affected.

The bridge will span three 20-metre sections and support four lanes, divided by central and lateral concrete barriers. It forms part of the D025 route duplication, which aims to enhance east–west connections in the metropolitan area.

Enhancing urban mobility and public access

The roadworks are expected to ease pressure on major transport corridors, particularly during peak hours. Engineers have highlighted that the upgraded infrastructure will improve traffic flow, support airport logistics, and increase safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

The total investment in these works exceeds 67 million US dollars, funded through PTI resources. Construction is expected to be completed between late 2026 and early 2027.

This new investment in road infrastructure, implemented by Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications, forms part of a broader national strategy to modernise transport networks and promote economic development.

Additional, infrastructure efforts are also advancing across the country, including the recently completed paved roads to ports in Itapúa. Through these initiative, Paraguay aims to position itself as a strategic logistics hub in the Southern Cone by improving urban mobility and transport access for both citizens and businesses.
