Paraguay Honours Music Icon Quemil Yambay With Post Stamps

Paraguay’s National Postal Service is paying tribute to the life and legacy of legendary folk musician and icon Quemil Yambay through a commemorative series of postage stamps. The initiative has regained attention following the artist’s death on 14 January 2026. The stamps reflect the enduring cultural impact of a figure deeply woven into Paraguay’s musical identity.

The stamps were issued by the Dirección Nacional de Correos del Paraguay (Dinacopa) in 2017. However, public interest has grown in recent weeks as tributes to Yambay continue nationwide. The series highlights both artistic heritage and collective memory.

A career that shaped Paraguayan folklore

Born in the Cordillera department, Quemil Yambay became one of Paraguay’s most recognisable cultural figures. He founded the folk group Los Alfonsinos in 1960. Through this group, he brought humour, traditional rhythms, and creativity to popular music. Yambay was especially known for incorporating animal sound imitations into his performances. This distinctive style made his shows accessible to all audiences. His music blended entertainment with cultural preservation.

Across several decades, Yambay recorded numerous albums and toured internationally. His work helped introduce Paraguayan folklore beyond national borders. UNESCO later recognised him as a Living Human Treasure.

Honouring the icon Quemil Yambay

Dinacopa’s commemorative stamps honour this legacy through carefully designed imagery. The postal service describes the series as a cultural and historical tribute. The collection intends to preserve memory through everyday circulation. The stamps appeal to collectors, philatelists, and admirers of Paraguayan culture. These stamps also serve an educational purpose. Younger generations are encouraged to engage with national heritage.

Those interested can contact the Philatelic Advisory Office at Alberdi 130 and Benjamín Constant. Enquiries are also available by emailing filateliaventas@gmail.com. Demand has increased following recent commemorations.

Through philately, Paraguay continues to celebrate figures who shaped its national story. The Yambay series reflects a broader commitment to cultural diffusion. Postage stamps become storytellers of identity. As public remembrance continues, this tribute ensures that Yambay’s legacy remains visible. His music, humour, and cultural pride continue to resonate across generations.
