Paraguay’s aviation sector is experiencing remarkable growth, with Silvio Pettirossi and Guaraní International Airports recording a total of 631,814 passengers in the first half of 2025, according to data from the National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (Dinac). This achievement highlights Paraguay’s emergence as a significant destination for tourism and international events.
The second-quarter report from Dinac indicates robust passenger traffic, with an average of over 100,000 passengers per month between April and June, representing a 15% increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. The first quarter recorded 322,765 passengers, while the second quarter saw 309,049 travellers, resulting in a mid-year total exceeding 631,000.
2025 record set in March
March proved to be the busiest month for Paraguay’s airports in the first half of 2025, with 109,186 passengers processed, setting a record for the year.
Silvio Pettirossi Airport in Luque, near to Asunción, and Guaraní Airport in Minga Guazú have served as the primary hubs, but the Teniente Amín Ayub Airport in Encarnación has recently joined their ranks, having been permanently designated an international airport. In August, direct flights from Encarnación to Buenos Aires commenced, enhancing Paraguay’s regional connectivity.
This surge in passenger numbers coincides with Paraguay’s rising profile as a tourist destination. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Paraguay was ranked among the top ten most sought-after destinations in South America last year.
Paraguay’s airports “gateways to rich culture”
With major events such as the World Rally and the Junior South American Games scheduled for August in Itapúa and the capital, aeronautical authorities anticipate that the nation’s airports could handle up to 1.5 million passengers by the end of 2025, a target that may well be exceeded.
A Dinac spokesperson remarked, “This is a pivotal moment for Paraguayan aviation. Our airports are not merely transit points; they are gateways to Paraguay’s rich culture and growing international appeal.”
As the country is in an exciting second half of 2025, all eyes are on Paraguay’s skies, where the future looks brighter- and busier – than ever.
