The Itaipú Binational Hydroelectric Plant continues to play a key role in providing electricity for Paraguay. In the first six months of 2025, the plant produced 37,270 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity. This is enough to be powering Paraguay’s electricity needs for about one year and five months. It shows how powerful Itaipú is, and how much it helps Paraguay remain energy-independent.
One reason for this strong performance is the plant’s excellent efficiency. A recent report showed that the machines used to generate electricity, were available and working 96.21% of the time up to June 2025. This is higher than the plant’s target, set at 94%, and means excellence in upkeep, technical precision, and sustainable management of water resources
In June alone, Itaipú Binational produced 5,671 GWh of electricity. Of that, 3,007 GWh came from the 50 Hz system, which is the part of energy meant for Paraguay. Out of that amount, 1,916 GWh were given directly to ANDE, the national company that delivers electricity across the country.
For the entire first half of the year, ANDE received 12,109 GWh from Itaipú. This was more than enough to meet the country’s needs during that time, showing Itaipú’s importance is not just for producing electricity, but also for making sure Paraguay has a stable and secure energy supply.
Powering Paraguay, and bringing clean energy
Itaipú’s contribution to clean energy is also impressive. Since the plant’s opening in 1984, it produced more than 3,089,070 GWh of electricity. This makes it the largest producer of clean, renewable hydroelectric energy in the world. That fits well with global goals to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions.
Itaipú Binacional, jointly operated by Paraguay and Brazil under a treaty ensuring equal electricity rights, allows Paraguay to utilise a portion of its share while selling the surplus to Brazil, generating additional revenue for the nation.
Thanks to these results in the first half of 2025, Itaipú Binational shows once again that it is not only a powerful energy plant, but also a key part of Paraguay’s energy plan and a symbol of strong teamwork between two countries. Maintaining the plant’s vitality will require ongoing investment, effective management, and continued cooperation between Paraguay and Brazil.
