Paraguay is on the verge of inaugurating the Gran Hospital del Sur in Encarnación, Itapúa. This facility will greatly improve access to high-quality healthcare across the southern region. With its opening, scheduled for July 25, the facility features modern infrastructure, and advanced medical capabilities.
Its inauguration marks a significant step toward reducing pressure on central hospitals by bringing essential services closer to the population. As part of a national strategy to decentralise specialist medical services, the hospital will offer high-complexity care to residents of Itapúa and neighbouring departments.
Hospital infrastructure and modern facilities
The Gran Hospital del Sur will include 232 beds and intensive care units for both adults and children. The hospital will have a dedicated emergency services for maternal, child, surgical, and trauma care. Cutting-edge laboratories and diagnostic imaging centres will also be a new addition to the medical center.
With a built area of over 40,000 square metres, the Gran Hospital del Sur is among the most significant investments in public health outside Paraguay’s capital Asunción. Situated near the Porã stream in Encarnación, the hospital will provide high-complexity medical care not only to residents of Itapúa but also to neighboring departments.
Additional infrastructure features include a helipad, wastewater treatment plants, an oxygen production facility, extensive parking and landscaped recreational areas. These are all designed to support the hospital’s mission to deliver top-tier care in a modern, functional environment.
Gran Hospital del Sur final inspections
The Paraguayan government is currently finalising preparations for the opening of the Gran Hospital del Sur. On July 11, Minister of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), Claudia Centurión, visited the site to inspect progress and confirm that workers are making the final touches.
One of the last infrastructure projects nearing completion is the hospital’s main access road, which links directly to Route PY06. Workers are finalising the two-kilometre stretch to ensure smooth access for ambulances, medical staff, and the public. By the scheduled opening, a dual-lane route is expected to be fully operational.
